So today we'd like to talk with you about something that isn't as often discussed in the CBD community by most brands: drug interactions. You’re probably familiar with “grapefruit warnings” that appear on a variety of medications, or maybe your doctor or pharmacist has told you to avoid grapefruit or grapefruit juice when taking a particular med.

Grapefruit contains "furanocoumarins", compounds that bind with and neutralize CYP450 enzymes in the gut, which help break down and eliminate drugs from our bodies. When these enzymes are essentially disabled from performing their function, too much of the drug enters the liver and flows into the bloodstream. This can cause dangerously elevated levels of the drug in your system.

CBD is similar to grapefruit in that it also binds with those enzymes, and research suggests it binds in multiple parts of the gut and liver. Once an enzyme has been inhibited, it can take days for the enzyme's function to return to baseline and beginning working to clear out these other substances properly again. Research has found that CBD is a "potent inhibitor" of two particular enzymes (CYP3A4 and CYP2D6) that affect many common drugs, including antihistamines, benzodiazepines, certain antidepressants and statins.

MORAL of the STORY: If you are currently on any medications that interact with grapefruit and are curious to learn more about CBD and if it might be a good choice for you, talk to your doctor about how to safely switch or taper off.
