People's Health & Wellness Clinic Our Mission

People’s Health & Wellness Clinic offers free essential health care to adults who do not have adequate health insurance

We define our primary service area as all of Washington County, plus the Orange County towns of Orange, Washington, and Williamstown. While our income guidelines go up to 300% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL), over 86% of our patients fall under 185% FPL ($20,036 gross a year for an individual – $26,955 for a couple).

Last week, the Vermont's Free & Referral Clinics (VFRC) and the People’s Health & Wellness Clinic (PHWC) had a hugely successful lobbying day at the State House!

We were proud to have 6 of the 8 clinic directors from across Vermont in attendance, along with 9 dedicated PHWC volunteers. Together, we held over a dozen meetings with key lawmakers, including Speaker of the House Jill Krowinski, Senate President Phil Baruth, and Senator Andrew Perchlik, Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee.

We were also honored to be recognized on the House floor by Representative Alyssa Black, Chair of the House Health Care Committee, for the critical work Vermont’s free clinics are doing every day.

A huge thank you to our incredible PHWC volunteers who showed up to advocate for our patients and communities: Dr. KC Bolton, Dr. Robert Penney, Dr. Susan Labarth, Dr. Tony Fiorillo, Sandra McLaughlin (volunteer nurse), and board members Sarah Hofmann, Karen Hinkle, Avram Patt, and Peter Anthony.

Your voices make a difference. Together, we are ensuring that Vermont’s most vulnerable residents continue to have access to the care they need.

We’re looking for nurse volunteers to join the People’s Health & Wellness Clinic 💙

Just one 3-hour shift a month can make a real difference for our patients and community. We offer flexible scheduling on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays—with morning, afternoon, and some evening options.

If you’re a Vermont-licensed nurse and want to give back in a meaningful way, we’d love to connect.

Reach out to Executive Director Daniel Barlow at daniel@phwcvt.org to learn more.

Had a great time this morning joining Bronwyn Fryer and former Lt. Gov. David Zuckerman on WDEV to talk about one of Central Vermont’s most fun and meaningful nights of the year—the Great Green Mountain Bob Dylan Wannabe Concert! Bronwyn even brought her guitar and treated listeners to a live Dylan tune on air.

Join us this Saturday at the Capitol City Grange—doors open at 6 PM, music starts at 7 PM. Ten incredible performers will be channeling Bob Dylan to raise money for the People’s Health & Wellness Clinic, supporting free primary care and dental hygiene for folks who otherwise couldn’t afford it.

Suggested donation at the door is $10—come out, enjoy some amazing music, and support a great cause.

Hope to see you there!

We’re reaching out with a fun invitation—and a request for a little musical courage.

On Saturday, March 28 (7–9 PM), the Great Green Mountain Bob Dylan Wannabe Contest will take place at the Capital City Grange in Montpelier. This beloved community event benefits the People’s Health & Wellness Clinic, helping fund free primary and mental health care for uninsured and underinsured neighbors here in Central Vermont.

We’re currently looking for musicians who would like to perform a Bob Dylan cover during the contest. You don’t need to be a professional—this event is all about enthusiasm, creativity, and having fun. Pick a Dylan classic, put your own spin on it, and help support a great cause while entertaining the community.

The evening also includes light refreshments, time to socialize, and a silent auction featuring local art, restaurant certificates, and unique experiences—all supporting PHWC’s patient care programs.

If you’re interested in performing—or know someone who should—please reach out to Bronwyn Fryer at bronwyn@bronwynfryer.com to sign up.

We hope you’ll consider joining the fun (or encouraging a friend to do so). Every performance helps ensure our neighbors have access to the care they need.

What a brilliant concept! Link on NOFA's link to apply.

NOFA-VT is providing micro-grants for members to have meals with their neighbors, creating opportunities to strengthen our local communities while connecting over a meal in this time of rupture.

Breaking bread together (especially with folks we don’t know well) has long been the fiber that weaves strong communities together. As rural organizing expert Kate Hess Place says: “Place-based organizing is how we restore politics to a human scale: neighbors coming together to defend what they love, demand accountability and build power where they live.” When we come together around a table, we remember that we are not alone and recommit to keeping each other fed, safe, and warm—especially when we’re feasting on delicious food grown by our producers and strengthening the local food system.

In the spirit of the parable of the long-handled spoons, we’ll grow joy, power, and safety by building strong relationships and keeping each other fed.

The Details:

NOFA-VT members are invited to apply for a $200 microgrant to host a “long-handled spoons dinner.” (And if you’re not a member yet, memberships start at just $1).

Invite 5-10 of your neighbors over for a meal—bonus points if they’re people way down the road you’ve only waved to and have been wanting to get to know—and we’ll give you up to $200 to spend on local, organic nourishment to gather over. If there are neighbors you’d like to invite, but there is a language barrier, let us know, and we can help hook you up with a translator!

All we require is that you seek out ingredients from local, organic, and small-scale farmers, and send us a picture of your gathering that we can share (it’s a-ok if it’s just of the food if you don’t want to show your face online).

We’ll provide optional guidance and prompts to meet the moment and get the conversation and connections flowing. You could share the parable of the long-handled spoons with the group to ground the meal, decide to take a collective action together that would better your community, talk about the values you all may share, or just gather with new folks you’ve been meaning to invite over and learn more about their lives.

Some conversations we’d be excited to lay the table for:

🌱 What are we concerned about in our community?
🌱 How can we plan to keep ourselves and our neighbors safe?
🌱 How could we get together more as neighbors?
🌱 How can we expand our love and safety beyond those people we already know?

To apply, fill out this short form before March 2: https://form.jotform.com/260405810783051

Of note: This is a pilot program with limited funds. While we may not be able to fund all applications in this initial round, we hope to offer additional funding rounds as resources become available.

There are a lot of resources to help guide you regarding 3SquaresVT. Call us at the clinic 802-479-1229 if you need help navigating a letter or a phone call you got.

If you get 3SquaresVT, you may have heard about work reporting requirements—and you may be confused about what they actually mean.

Some adults 18-64 have to report info about work, volunteering, or meeting an exemption to get 3SquaresVT for more than 3 months. Many people already work the hours needed to meet the rule, and many others can be exempt from the rule.

If you're already working or volunteering, you are probably already meeting the work rule, such as:
- Working 80 hours a month (paid or unpaid)
- Taking part in job training for 80 hours a month
- Volunteering (hours depend on your benefit amount)

However, you DON'T have to meet the rule if:
- You already work and earn $217.50/wk or $935.25/mo
- There's a child under 14 living with you
- You're pregnant
- You get Reach Up
- You have a disability or medical condition
- You've applied for or are getting unemployment benefits
- You're in treatment for alcohol or drugs
- You're a student studying half time or more
- You're under 18 or over 64 years old
- You have a personal obstacle or barrier to meeting the required work hours.

Make sure the state has the info needed to know you meet the work rule, or are excused. You can do this by:
- Calling the state at 800-479-6151 or 7-1-1 for relay calls, or 1-855-247-3092 for interpretation services
- Using the Document Uploader
- Visiting a local Economic Services Division office
- Mailing a statement to: ADPC – Economic Services Division, 280 State Drive, Waterbury, VT 05671

If you want some support with understanding this rule and what it means for you, reach out! There are organizations across the state that are trained to help you. Learn more: https://dcf.vermont.gov/benefits/3SquaresVT/WorkRules
