We became Food Label Detectives in last night’s Food-Mood Connection class! 🕵️‍♀️ Local food scientist and nutrition expert taught us how to read nutrition labels, how to interpret ingredient lists, and how to be on the lookout for sneaky sugars (hint: it hides under many names!). We compared labels for some common foods, and figured out how much sugar we eat in an average day. Very eye-opening! 😳

Next, we learned how to make a super simple and delicious Chocolate Oat Bar recipe. Only four ingredients and amazingly delicious! Better tasting than any of the store-bought items, and better for us, too!

Thank you to all who joined us for this five-part series, and to Jessica Grelle for sharing so much helpful nutrition knowledge! So much gratitude to for providing our community with the incredible BHS Culinary Lab, and to for hosting this class series!

When we know better, we eat better - and then we feel better! 🍓 🍊 🍌 🥒 🫐 🍇

We’re celebrating March birthdays at BYFS, thanks to a fabulous donation from Brightbirthdaysinc! 🥳 Bright Birthdays provided over 50 birthday bags, each filled with cake mix, frosting, candles, plates, napkins, and a very special stuffed toy. 🎂 They are definitely bringing joy and brightening our clients’ days! 🎈Many thanks to Bright Birthdays, Inc. for partnering with us, and to the Barrington Area Community Foundation for supporting this project!

Food is essential fuel for our bodies and brains! 🧠 In this week’s Food-Mood Connection class, we learned how to eat for optimal academic and athletic performance. We discovered the difference between quick- and slow-releasing carbs, and played a game that taught us what to eat and when depending on the type of energy and endurance we need. Next, we made four different smoothie recipes and taste tested them all - they were delicious!

Here’s to feeling fueled for our busy schedules! 🫐 🥑 Thanks to and for the use of the fabulous BHS Culinary Lab!

February 23–March 1 marks National Eating Disorders Awareness Week. According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), nearly 1 in 10 will experience an eating disorder in their lifetime. That means we all likely know someone who is or will be impacted.

Eating disorders are serious, complex mental health disorders affecting daily life and health. They often occur alongside Major Depressive Disorder, Anxiety Disorder, or Substance Use Disorders.

Warning signs include changes in eating or exercise habits, skipping meals or social events, a preoccupation with body or food, shame or loss of control around eating, often feeling weak or cold, or gastrointestinal issues.

If you know someone who is struggling, please encourage them to reach out for support. Visit www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/get-help/ for a free screening tool and treatment locator.

Our February newsletter is all about staying grounded, so we’re sharing one of our favorite grounding techniques: box breathing. It’s a simple exercise that takes less than 30 seconds - we can all make time for that!

Here’s how to do it:

✨ Sit upright and exhale, emptying your lungs completely.

✨Inhale through your nose for the count of four.

✨ Before exhaling, hold for the count of four.

✨ Exhale slowly for the count of four.

✨ Hold empty for the count of four.

Box breathing helps regulate the nervous system, leading to improved mental health and well-being. Use it any time you’re feeling anxious or want to alleviate stress.
