The USPSTF recommends all women over age 40 get a mammogram every two years, and screening mammograms are typically covered with no out-of-pocket cost. 1 in 8 U.S. women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, but advances in digital mammography have led to significantly increased survival rates.

To schedule your screening mammogram, ask your primary care physician (P*P) for a referral or call Barstow Community Hospital’s One Call Scheduling at 760-957-3198.

Barstow Community Hospital Recognized as a "Baby-Friendly" and "Birthing-Friendly" Facility

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Care Compare tool has a new feature that allows consumers to find hospitals and health systems with a Birthing-Friendly designation, indicating it participates in a state or national perinatal quality improvement program. Birthing-Friendly is the first-ever CMS designation to describe high-quality maternity care.

"Barstow Community Hospital has earned the international Baby-Friendly designation for more than 16 years," said Cathy Stephens, Director of Women's Services at Barstow Community Hospital. "Our ongoing commitment to evidence-based perinatal quality measures reflects our dedication to improving maternal health. We are proud to be recognized as a CMS Birthing-Friendly facility," added Stephens.

Eighty percent of pregnancy-related deaths are preventable, and Black, American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander people have the highest rates of pregnancy-related death. Pregnant and postpartum people from some racial and ethnic minority groups are also more likely to have negative healthcare experiences during pregnancy and delivery that impact the quality of care they receive and health outcomes. The Birthing-Friendly designation is a step towards ensuring that all pregnant and postpartum people can find high-quality maternity care.

"As maternal health inequities persist across the nation, the designation offers a tangible marker of the evidence-based practices that hospitals can pursue to close these gaps and ultimately provide the kind of care all parents deserve," said Chiquita Brooks-LaSure, CMS Administrator.

Do you have painful, swollen, heavy-feeling or aching legs from Varicose Veins? If so, your doctor may suggest lifestyle changes that may help prevent varicose veins from becoming worse. But if those don't work, or if your varicose veins are causing a lot of pain or damaging your overall health, your doctor might refer you to a vascular surgeon for other options.

Dr. Francisco Vega, Vascular Surgeon and independent member of Barstow Community Hospital’s Medical Staff, specializes in performing these surgical procedures. Find out more and see a longer video with Dr. Vega here https://barstowhospital.com/varicose-veins/.

The 30-Minute ER Pledge and what it means for you.

In a medical emergency, time matters. That’s why, at Barstow Community Hospital, we work diligently to have you initially seen by a medical professional within 30 minutes of your arrival in the ER.

The Emergency Department (ED) average wait time presented on the hospital's website is an informational service to the public. It is approximate and based on a rolling average that is updated four times an hour and does not represent the exact current activity in the ER waiting room.

When patients enter the Emergency Department at Barstow Community Hospital, the time of their arrival is noted in the computer system. We pledge that a clinical professional (physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner) will work diligently to have our patients initially seen within 30 minutes of their noted arrival.

If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 911. If you need to go to the emergency room, we’re ready for you 24/7.

A note from Michele Reynolds, Chief Nurse Executive of Quorum Health:

Happy Nurses Week 2025!
This year’s theme, “The Power of Nurses™,” reminds us of the incredible impact nurses have—not just at the bedside, but across every corner of healthcare. Nurses are the steady hands during critical moments, the advocates for safer care, and the hearts behind every healing story.

Dedication to our profession drives improvements in quality outcomes, inspires innovation, and creates meaningful patient experiences. The difference you make is immeasurable, and this week, we honor that power with deep gratitude.

Thank you for leading, caring, and inspiring—today and every day.

Really enjoyed our corporate get-together. We dove into high reliability training and had some real conversations about what it means to lead in healthcare. We also talked about how to hardwire best practices to be more consistent, intentional, and reliable as leaders.

Then we wrapped it up with a shrimp boil 🍤(and of course, some Waldo’s chicken)🐔 and had a chance to just connect and recharge with the team.
