Do you believe in magic? We do! Jonathan Molo the Magician was at Los Domingos recently and not only awed us with his magic but also shared some of his tricks with us. Thank you American Cruisers MC Chapter 149 for sponsoring our veterans for this great event! The dinner and magic show is a Tim Heiden Foundation fundraiser; The foundation was created in the memory of Tim Heiden, founder of the Christmas Cops and Kids toy delivery program which ensures that every child receives a toy at Christmas.

We weren’t in a tower at Hogwarts, and we couldn’t really share our magic secrets, but Jonathan did bring us much joy and many laughs as we honed in on our new magical skills! Along with Mentalist who read our minds… we tried to warn him!

Thank you, San Bernardino County Barstow Sheriff’s Station, for your Pre-Valentines Day visit! Barstow Sheriff’s Station Captain Markegard, Lieutenant Mello, and Deputies honored us with their company; sharing love of country along with a dedication to serve and protect with a commitment to public safety.

A shared comradery was present for those men and women that met, and you can easily see the strong sense of discipline, loyalty and sacrifice they are often characterized by with a shared culture; both our veterans and our law enforcement being a part of keeping us safe. VHC Barstow thanks you.

Junkin Ain’t Easy! But lovin these guys is! Every fall for the past 14 years, Mike Mazzola and his crew have held a fundraiser “Junkin Ain’t Easy” Car Show and BBQ event in Apple Valley. Hundreds of people flock to the event every year to enjoy the classic cars, good food, music and good company.

Well, Junkin may not be easy for Mike Mazzola, but it looks like a Mazzola event is easy to enjoy. The Junkin’ Ain’t Easy crew recently arrived to present the Home with a very generous donation, representative of their successful event! The funds will be used for the enhancement of the residents’ activities! The crew showed up at the home in style, much to the delight of our residents. The men and women of the Barstow Veterans Home thank you Junkin Ain’t Easy! We are proud to live in a community like the High Desert and a country where patriotism is alive and well.

CALVET Celebrates appointment of Skilled Nursing Facility Administrator of the Barstow Veterans Home, Anthony Pham.

Governor Gavin Newsom has announced the appointment of Anthony Pham as Skilled Nursing Facility Administrator of the Barstow Veterans Home of California.

Pham is a graduate of the University of Southern California where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Gerontology and a Master of Science Degree in Gerontology. Pham has over twenty years of experience in skilled nursing and senior housing industry administration. Anthony is married with two sons.

In his newly appointed role as Skilled Nursing Facility Administrator, Pham will oversee the daily operations of nursing, dietary, activities, resident health care, and strict regulatory compliance to ensure smooth, compliant, quality care.

Skilled Nursing Facility Administrators are key players in the care team and are entrusted with the responsibility of managing the care of our loved ones. They touch the lives of residents and families, and, most importantly, ensure that their staff provides the highest level of quality care to a vulnerable population. To become an Administrator and Skilled Nursing Facility Administrator takes commitment and dedication.

Upon becoming an administrator, they must continue life-long learning to provide the best care possible. They are masters of multi-tasking, considering every aspect of a person's life, not just their medical needs, while building a sense of home and community. The Veterans Home of California Barstow commends, salutes, and thanks the Administrators and Skilled Nursing Facility Administrators in all of the 8 CalVet Homes across our great state - we know they are committed to providing excellent quality of care and quality of life for those entrusted to their care.

Welcome to VHC Barstow Anthony! Please join me in congratulating Anthony Pham on his new appointment by Governor Newsom!

Ventriloquist Mark Griffiths was engaging and captivated our residents with his ventriloquist figures, or dummys as they say. We had a blast with Marcs unique and interactive performance. The entertaining variety acts resulting in moments that highlighted joy, laughter and a very engaging experience.

Residents had a "blast" and "loved that really fun show". We have a real appreciation for the technical mastery required to perform so convincingly. What a hoot!

Pardon our joy, we are having a sing along! Thank you, High Desert Marines, for organizing this monthly event with our veterans.

Musical gatherings and listening to music are wonderful, but there is something about singing your heart out to those good old classics. We aren’t loud; but we were mighty! It’s a toe tappin Tuesday, it was a great way to start out the day.

Nothing like an ice cream sundae on a Monday. Thanks to Mead Mortuary and Friends for providing our veterans with another winter social.

The key to a winter social is to pair the ice cream with something warm. So… a 1950’s sing along spearheaded by resident Carol warmed us all up! The ice cream socials are a hit, and we enjoy a frosty treat no matter the weather.

As we reflect on 2025, we are filled with gratitude for the incredible community that continues to stand beside our nation’s service members, veterans, and military families. Your belief in our mission, your generosity, and your partnership is invaluable to our veterans.

To our Active Duty and veteran community, and to the families who serve alongside them: thank you for your sacrifice, resilience, and courage. You are the reason we do what we do.

To our funders, donors, community partners, collaborators, and supporters: thank you for empowering this mission. Because of you, we are not only meeting needs — we are building futures. You make it possible for us to strengthen mental wellness support, and community connection across the region we serve.

As we step into 2026, we do so with renewed energy and hope, and with deep appreciation for the people who continue to believe in love of country, meaningful careers, and stronger communities.

Wishing you a safe, peaceful, and blessed holiday season.

With heartfelt gratitude,
ALL OF US AT VHC BARSTOW
