It’s time! We are only 60 days away from the 19th annual Sugar Run 5k!!! It’s hard to believe we’ve “been around the block” this many times all in the effort to raise money to help find a cure for type 1 diabetes. Each race has been bigger and better than the last! Since the first run in 2006, the SR5K has raised more than $100,000 given to Beyond Type 1 as doctors and researchers look to cure this disease.

We hope you will come support our cause and have a ton of fun doing it Saturday November 8, 2025!

⚡️⚡️Screening for Type 1 Diabetes is crucial⚡️⚡️

Dr. Latif continues to spread the word and educate healthcare professionals about the importance of screening for T1D. He presented the latest research in Myrtle Beach, SC to the South Carolina Physicians Assistants Conference. Screening can show a person’s chances of developing T1D throughout their lifetime. This can greatly mitigate the shock of diagnosis and the complications that can arise when the disease goes undetected until severe illness develops. A new way to prevent immune cells from attacking insulin-producing beta-cells
Replacing insulin-producing beta-cells that have been lost in people with type 1 diabetes is a promising strategy to restore control of glucose levels. However, because the autoimmune disease is a continuous process, replacing beta-cells results in another immune attack if immunosorbent drugs are not used, which carry significant side-effects. This year, Dr. Song reported on the potential of an immunotherapy he developed that prevents immune cells from attacking beta-cells and reduces inflammatory processes. This immunotherapy offers several potential benefits, including eliminating the need for immunosuppression, long-lasting effects, and the ability to customize the treatment to each patient.

The ability to suppress autoimmunity has implications for both prevention of type 1 diabetes and improving success rates of islet transplantation.

Recommendations for Managing Insulin Pumps in the Heat:
Keep Insulin Cool:
Store insulin in a cooler (not directly on ice), a Frio cooling case, or in an air-conditioned environment when possible.
Avoid Direct Sunlight:
Protect your pump from direct sunlight, as it can significantly raise the temperature.
Cover the Pump:
Consider covering the pump with a cloth or placing it in a pocket to help shield it from the heat.
Be Mindful of Infusion Sets:
Change infusion sets more frequently in hot weather, as heat can affect the adhesive and potentially lead to disconnections.

🌟🌟Memphis Senior Health Fair⭐️⭐️

The AM Diabetes staff spent the day at the Memphis Public Libraries - Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library in Memphis talking to dozens of seniors about how to make their lives better. From Chronic Care Management programs, to the “Silver Sneakers”, to Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction . Going to patients where they are is so important and we had a great day not only educating them about what we have to offer, but also learning more about their needs and how we can help! Thanks to everyone who came out and please reach out to us with any questions!! We LOVE our patients!!
