What is the difference between dry needling and trigger point needling?
Spoiler alert- it’s all Acupuncture! And they’re actually the same needling technique.
Often times these terms are used interchangeably, and it certainly can be confusing. But the approach is the same. In this technique, thin needles are inserted into taut bands of muscle called ‘trigger points’ to induce a ‘fasciculation’ or local twitch response. This helps to break the cycle of pain, releases tension, increases blood flow, and makes muscles easier to retrain and rebalance.
Did you know?- Acupuncturists go through thousands of hours of hands on training to learn this skill set, and not every other practitioner is required to be an expert. In the State of New Jersey, Licensed Acupuncturists are required to obtain no less than 2500 hours of supervised clinical experience while they master their craft, plus 30 hours per every 2 years of continuing education. Other professionals learn to needle with an average of only about 40 hours of professional education.
You’ll probably want to come to the experts 😉
