We had the pleasure of attending PennState Health’s RecFest to celebrate inclusive recreation and community connection. The day started with Opening Ceremonies, which included a speech from Maggie Redden, who is a former member of Penn State’s Adaptive Athletics program and a 2008 Beijing Paralympian in wheelchair track! Demonstrations were given on adaptive boxing, adaptive gaming, service dog tasks, and more.
We had the chance to speak with Kenneth Simons, founder of VeloChair, which can be used for adaptive recreation. “The VeloChair is fun to use! It’s an innovative alternative to traditional manual or power wheelchairs and requires just 10 pounds of force on one leg for propulsion. Steering is intuitive and can be done with either one or both arms,” he said. The device folds easily for transport in a small SUV or on a commercial airplane and is designed to meet the needs of people affected by illness, injury, or aging.
We had a great time at the event! Follow us on our socials for more information and resources on adaptive recreation and how you can fund it.
