A message from my heart:
I have lived in Batavia for over 10 years, and chose to open my therapy practice here so I could offer mental health support to parents in my own community. Today, I witnessed a man in our downtown with an inflammatory anti-trans sign. This person has pulled this stunt before, and attempts to goad people into confrontation, recording all of the interactions to rile up his fan-base of trolls and bigots. He targets businesses with pride flags and those who align themselves with the LGBTQ community, in a shameful attempt to harass and terrorize our trans and q***r neighbors.
In my personal life, I am loud and proud about my politics, but I have been uncertain about how, and whether, to share my beliefs on the accounts connected to my business. But now, in light of this event and broader attacks on the rights of transgender people across the country, it feels imperative to voice my support for the trans community, and all others under the LGBTQ umbrella.
I am a social worker, and according to my professional code of ethics it’s my job to serve and advocate for people who are oppressed, marginalized and otherwise vulnerable. Trans folks face social stigma, discrimination and violence, as well as challenges accessing affirming healthcare. The toll on their mental health is extremely high, and I firmly believe that affirming care and supportive spaces can be life-saving.
Let's keep taking steps to make Batavia, and the world, a place of tolerance and mutual respect. I promise to keep learning.
With gratitude,
Missy Hem, LCSW
