Both activities encourage creativity and self-expression while simultaneously improving fine motor coordination and sensory integration. These tasks can be adapted to different skill levels and provide therapeutic benefits for children in occupational therapy or developmental activities.

Winter Shaving Cream Writing:
Fine Motor Skills:
Finger Strength: Writing or drawing shapes in the shaving cream strengthens finger and hand muscles.
Control and Precision: Moving fingers purposefully to create shapes enhances motor planning and fine motor control.

Sensory Skills:
Tactile Exploration: The soft and slippery texture of shaving cream provides rich tactile input, which can help desensitize children with tactile defensiveness.
Proprioceptive Feedback: Pressing into the shaving cream gives feedback to the fingers and hands, supporting body awareness and sensory integration.
Calming Sensory Play: Engaging in this messy play can be soothing and regulating for children who are overstimulated or anxious.

Holiday Lights!
Fine Motor Skills:
Precision and Coordination: Picking up and placing small pom-poms requires precise control of the fingers, strengthening fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
Grip Development: The activity involves using a pincer grip to hold and place the pom-poms, which is essential for tasks like writing and drawing.
Bilateral Coordination: Using one hand to apply glue and the other to place the pom-poms helps develop coordinated use of both hands.

Sensory Skills:
Tactile Input: Handling the soft and textured pom-poms provides tactile stimulation, helping the child explore and regulate their sensory processing.
Visual Stimulation: The colorful pom-poms stimulate visual tracking and focus.

Good quality playtime is essential for child development.

Improve the quality of your child’s play by trying a toy rotation!

A toy rotation system can help:
-Reduce clutter
-Improve a child’s focus during play
-Encourage more creative play
-Easier clean up
-Reduced overwhelm (for grown ups and kids!)
-Kids get to look forward to “rotation day” when they get “new” toys!

Oftentimes, if there are too many toys to choose from, all the toys get taken out but none really get played with for more than a minute. Reduce the decision fatigue and make your child’s toys seem like new every few days or weeks by doing a toy rotation.

🎁🗣️Trying to get your toddler to talk and wondering what type of toys to gift for the holidays? We are here to help break down the research for you!

Research shows that young children learn best through back and forth interactions with a real life person. Children do NOT learn well through screens (videos, tablet games, etc.) or flashy noisy toys. Even when toys or videos were labeled as “educational,” children learned more through an interaction with a real person.

When choosing toys for your emerging talker, you can look for toys that will encourage creativity and pretend play. The toys pictured here are examples of toys that provide ample opportunities for language modeling from caregivers. Lots of language modeling results in LEARNING!

🤔 What is Motor Planning? 🤔

Motor planning, also known as praxis, is the brain's ability to figure out how to perform new movements and actions. For kids, this means tasks like getting dressed, holding a pencil, or even playing sports. 🧠✨

When children struggle with motor planning, they might have difficulty figuring out how to move their bodies to complete tasks. Occupational therapy helps by teaching kids how to break down and practice new movements, improving coordination and confidence.

OT is all about supporting children as they master the skills they need for everyday life! 🌍
