Denim Day
Yesterday, our partners at the NYS DOL invited us to join them as they joined communities around the world by wearing denim in honor of survivors and to raise awareness about sexual violence. April 29 is recognized internationally as Denim Day, a day of solidarity and education.

Denim Day began in 1999 after a deeply troubling court ruling in Italy overturned a sexual assault conviction. The judge argued that the survivor must have consented because her jeans were “too tight” to be removed without her assistance. In response, members of the Italian Parliament wore jeans to protest the harmful message this decision sent. Their act of resistance sparked a global movement that continues today.

Denim Day serves as a yearly reminder that we must challenge the myths, stereotypes, and cultural norms that excuse or minimize sexual violence. Wearing denim is a visible statement that what someone wears is never an invitation, never a justification, and never an excuse for violence. It is one way we uplift survivors and commit to creating safer, more supportive communities.

Local Resources are available and survivors of sexual assault deserve compassionate, confidential support. The following local organizations provide crisis response, counseling, advocacy, and other essential services:

• RESTORE Sexual Assault Services (Serving Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Orleans, and Wyoming Counties)
24/7 Confidential Hotline: 1‑800‑527‑1757
Provides crisis intervention, hospital advocacy, counseling, and support groups.

• YWCA of Genesee County – Domestic & Sexual Violence Services
24/7 Crisis Line: (585) 343‑7513
Offers emergency shelter, advocacy, safety planning, and counseling.

• National Sexual Assault Hotline (RAINN)
24/7 Confidential Support: 1‑800‑656‑HOPE (4673)
Online chat available at rainn.org

If you or someone you know has experienced sexual violence, you are not alone. Support is available, and reaching out is a powerful step toward healing.
