This , we pivot to focus on the role of women throughout history and their influence on the deathcare industry we know today.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, women were primary caretakers of the home and family-in life and in death. Deathcare was considered domestic, family-centered work. Women washed, dressed and laid out the deceased at home, led mourning rituals, and often provided grief support. After the Civil War, embalming became more common practice, deathcare shifted from home to funeral parlors, and as a result, women were pushed to the background in deathcare (albeit temporarily). After the introduction of embalming and the shift to funeral parlors in the late 1800's, women, determined to continue to care for their communities, pushed past systemic barriers and fought for education, licensure in funeral service.

As we close out Black History Month, we highlight the African American funeral homes in our communities. For generations, they have been more than businesses—they’ve been centers of community, culture, and care. Funeral directors and morticians often provided support far beyond services for the dead, hosting meetings, supporting civil rights efforts, and preserving traditions of homegoing celebrations. They advocate for and educate the next generation of caretakers, ensuring the care, compassion, and traditions of funeral and mortuary science are carried forward with pride. These funeral homes were instrumental in ensuring dignity in life and death for those denied access to fair care due to racial discrimination and remain today as beacons of history and legacy to carry forward.

Last week, several of our Batesville engineering associates had the pleasure of attending the Engineering Career Fair as well as the Reverse Career Fair at the University of Cincinnati.

Our associates, Adam, Ethan, and Peyton, connected with so many talented, motivated students eager to launch their career. From insightful conversations about technical coursework to discussions about hands-on project experience, our team was impressed by the student's depth of knowledge, enthusiasm, and professionalism. It was inspiring to hear about their accomplishments, leadership roles, and the innovative projects they’re pursuing at UC.

Batesville is proud to continue strengthening our relationship with the University of Cincinnati, and we look forward to welcoming future graduates to our engineering program.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by the Batesville table—we look forward to staying connected and seeing all that you accomplish!

While often overlooked, African American women played vital roles in deathcare. Henrietta Duterte of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania became the first African American woman to own a mortuary in the 1800s after taking over the undertaking business started by her husband after his death. Earning a hallmark for efficiency, her business was successful enough to also support her community through generous contributions to the AME Church of St. Thomas, the Freedman's Aid Society, and other causes. In addition, as a member of the Underground Railroad, she used her funeral business to help freedom-seekers escape slavery. Today, women continue to be serve critical roles in the deathcare profession, guiding families during one of their most difficult times with compassion and care.
