White River Health Cardiology recently started offering TCAR (Transcarotid Artery Revascularization) procedures to patients for carotid disease. These procedures have the lowest stroke risk among all vascular procedures and are considered a safer option overall. To date, the team has successfully completed 11 TCAR procedures.

The TCAR procedure treats carotid artery disease through a minimally invasive surgical procedure. It involves temporarily reversing blood flow in the carotid artery while a stent is placed to open plaque and restore normal blood flow. Flow reversal helps protect the brain from any dislodged plaque or debris that could cause a stroke. Due to this feature, TCAR has been shown to have a lower stroke risk compared to traditional carotid endarterectomy. This procedure also allows for a quicker recovery time.

Glad to participate in the first T-Car stenting for carotid artery disease at White River Health. It is an important step in treatment for carotid artery disease for our patients. TCar differs from other carotid artery stenting procedures by using direct carotid artery access and reverse blood flow neuroprotection to reduce the risk of stroke.
