On this day in 1941, Thomas Gustave Plant, the once enterprising shoe manufacturer and later owner of the Lucknow Estate, passed away after a four-day stay at Laconia Hospital. He was 82 years old.
Born to Canadian immigrants and raised in Bath, Maine, Tom rose from humble beginnings to great heights in the shoe industry. He became a self-made millionaire. He helped revolutionize the industry with his innovative practices and employment of welfare capitalism. After selling his business, Tom turned his attention to the Ossipee Mountains, where he created an expansive mountaintop estate called Lucknow. Lucknow was a place of beauty and recreation. It was a place where Tom could enjoy the solitude without being deprived of the luxuries to which he was accustomed.
Tom Plant was known to be demanding, and his relationship with the people of Moultonborough was not always warm. Still - whether he's cast as the hero or the villain in the story - Tom certainly left a lasting legacy on the Ossipee Mountains with his Lucknow Estate.
Today, we honor Tom Plant's life and appreciate his forward thinking. Without Tom Plant, there would be no Castle in the Clouds!
