Happy National Black Women Physicians’ Day! ✨👩🏾⚕️🩺✨
Today, we honor the legacy of Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler, the first Black woman in the U.S. to earn a medical degree in 1864. A true trailblazer, Dr. Crumpler dedicated her life to caring for underserved communities, especially freed African Americans after the Civil War. She authored A Book of Medical Discourses, one of the first medical texts written by a Black physician, focusing on the health of women and children.
Her resilience and commitment paved the way for generations of Black women physicians, who continue to break barriers and serve with excellence. Representation matters in medicine, and today, The Louisiana Center for Health and Wellness celebrates Black women physicians. You are heroes, healers, and history-makers.
