Happy National Black Women Physicians’ Day! ✨👩🏾‍⚕️🩺✨

Today, we honor the legacy of Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler, the first Black woman in the U.S. to earn a medical degree in 1864. A true trailblazer, Dr. Crumpler dedicated her life to caring for underserved communities, especially freed African Americans after the Civil War. She authored A Book of Medical Discourses, one of the first medical texts written by a Black physician, focusing on the health of women and children.

Her resilience and commitment paved the way for generations of Black women physicians, who continue to break barriers and serve with excellence. Representation matters in medicine, and today, The Louisiana Center for Health and Wellness celebrates Black women physicians. You are heroes, healers, and history-makers.

Black History is American History.

At The Louisiana Center for Health and Wellness, we recognize that Black history is woven into the very fabric of our nation’s story. The contributions, resilience, and brilliance of Black individuals have shaped every aspect of American society—from medicine and science to art, culture, politics, and beyond.

Representation and diversity matter. When we see ourselves reflected in history, in leadership, and in the world around us, it fuels inspiration, empowerment, and progress. Acknowledging and celebrating these contributions isn’t just about the past—it’s about honoring the present and shaping the future.

This Black History Month, we will highlight not only the trailblazers who paved the way but also the incredible individuals in our communities today who are making history in real time. Stay tuned as we shine a light on those whose work uplifts, innovates, and transforms lives.

🎀 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to spread knowledge, encourage early detection, and support those affected by this disease. As a physician and CEO of The Louisiana Center for Health and Wellness, I want to share some important tips that can help in the fight against breast cancer:

1️⃣ Know Your Risk: Talk to your doctor about your family history and any genetic factors that could increase your risk.

2️⃣ Regular Screenings: Early detection saves lives! Women aged 40+ should schedule annual mammograms, while those with a higher risk may need to start earlier.

3️⃣ Self-Exams Matter: Get to know your breasts. Regular self-exams help you identify any changes early on. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider if you notice anything unusual.

4️⃣ Healthy Lifestyle: Maintain a balanced diet, exercise regularly, limit alcohol, and avoid smoking. These habits can help reduce your risk.

5️⃣ Stay Informed: Educate yourself and others about breast cancer. Awareness leads to action, which leads to hope.

Together, we can make a difference. Let’s honor those we’ve lost, celebrate the survivors, and support those still fighting. 💪🏾💖
