First of all my mom wants to thank everyone who contributed to the gofundme, sent prayers, and everything that St. Jude the Apostle School Baton Rouge has done. If she could thank everyone individually she would. The overwhelming amount of help that came from the last post was a blessing. As the new school year starts she is able to get a part time sitter for a while as she starts her new job as a kindergarten teacher.

The infusion therapy has been helping my dad tremendously and it’s working because the necrosis is no longer spreading. We are now trying to get him inpatient for all his therapies as that is where he will make the most improvement. But if that falls through he is in outpatient Sage Rehabilitation-Outpatient Day Neuro and she will need help for sure to help get him to and from his therapies.

Again all the thoughts and prayers are always welcome and appreciated so much. The power of God is amazing.

A side note: this week we are at the beach with the family and enjoying spending time together. Dad is enjoying the beach and the vitamin D from the sun is doing wonders for him as well.

The last time there was an update on my dad, Kevin Bowen, he had been diagnosed with radiation necrosis as a result of the radiation treatments to treat what was left of the brain cancer cells after surgery. During this point, he was still walking and only experiencing mild cognitive issues like confusing dates and times. Beginning in December of 2022, he began falling frequently and having issues walking on his own. On February 3rd of 2023, he had a seizure that caused him to fall and knock himself out. That fall and seizure placed him in the hospital for 2 days where they monitored his brain activity and came to the conclusion he had been having small/focal seizures for some time now and that most likely was causing the falls. After the seizure on February 3rd, he began to lose more and more cognitive functions and the ability to walk. Currently, he is in a wheelchair and needs help doing everything. He has no muscle or capability to hold himself up. His speech is severely impacted as he has trouble finding the correct words or word association to speak. Due to the multiple seizures he has a week, he has numerous tremors as well. He was admitted to an inpatient facility prior to Easter and stayed for 10 days. He had multiple therapy sessions and doctors evaluating him and his medications. Though he was and is still on an anti-seizure medication, he continues to have seizures weekly and thus the inpatient facility saw no improvement through therapy and sent him back home. The doctors are unsure about what is causing the drastic decline and the seizures, and they have recommended that we call M.D. Anderson or the Mayo Clinic for further help on investigating what could be the cause of this.

Our mom is currently a full-time teacher and that salary alone is sustaining the family. But, my dad can not be left alone during the day and requires 24-7 care. Home health has sent a nurse that comes once a week to check on him and his therapy technicians now come to the house as it is hard for my mom or anyone to load him into a car and bring him to his appointments. What we are looking for are answers and help in finding a service that provides a daytime sitter to help get him up in the morning, get him changed/dressed, and fed until someone can come home to be with him.

Please continue to keep him in your prayers.
