All behavior, even our self defeating actions, serves a purpose. Sometimes it's from a numbing part of self that tries to protect from pain or our desire to feel close to other run awry. Understanding the goals of our actions allows us to view our own shortcomings with more tenderness, and we can meet these needs in a more productive way. Counseling can help.
