Dilated eye exams allow a close and comprehensive look at the retina, located in the back of the eye, and identify signs of a retinal condition like diabetic retinopathy in the earliest, most treatable stages.

Eye dilation can be uncomfortable because dilated eyes may be sensitive to light, and it may be challenging to read, drive, or use a computer for a few hours until the dilation wears off. However, a few hours of mild discomfort and inconvenience can protect against vision loss and blindness.

If you have diabetes, prioritize your vision and get regular dilated eye exams so you can See for a Lifetime. Learn more and access resources to share with friends and family at SeeforaLifetime.org/DiabeticRetinopathy.

Do you recognize this black-and-white grid with a dot in the middle? It's called an Amsler grid, named after Swiss ophthalmologist Marc Amsler, who developed it in 1947.

Your retina specialist may ask you to look at an Amsler grid regularly to monitor for changes in your vision, which could be age-related macular degeneration ( ).

To check your vision, cover one eye at a time (keeping your glasses on if you wear them), hold the grid 12 inches away, and look at the dot. If the lines appear wavy, dim, irregular, or fuzzy, let your eye doctor know immediately.

Download our Amsler grid today and use it to check your vision so you can see for a lifetime. www.SeeforaLifetime.org/Resources

Retina health is key to healthy vision, yet it is often overlooked until visual changes occur, which could lead to vision loss. Knowing the risks and catching any early signs of disease can help preserve vision from conditions like diabetic retinopathy and AMD. Common adult symptoms of retinal disease include blurred central vision, loss of color vision, distortion or straight lines appearing wavy, and floaters or flashes of light. Common risk factors for retinal disease include older age, family history, smoking, and high blood pressure and cholesterol.
