Today, we are recognizing Laureal Richard, PTA! Our PTs are doing great things!! We are extremely proud to share the impactful work of one of our physical therapists, Kelly Kramer, PT, DPT. Kelly and her team recently presented a research project exploring the prevalence of imposter syndrome among Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students.

Imposter syndrome is commonly described as a persistent feeling of phoniness or a sense that one does not deserve their success or place, despite evidence of competence. As part of the project, a survey was distributed to all physical therapy programs in the state. The research was a first-of-its-kind effort to examine imposter syndrome specifically in DPT students within our region. While this phenomenon has been recognized in many healthcare education programs, it had not yet been studied in the allied health fields at the state level. This project found that the experiences or feelings of imposter syndrome peak during the second year of DPT education, a critical time in students’ academic and clinical development.

The motivation behind the study was to start a conversation regarding the importance of mental health in healthcare education. By shining a light on these experiences, Kelly and her team hope to advocate for better mental health resources and support systems for all students and professionals in the fields of health science.
