"What saddens us the most is knowing how this will affect our patients, their families, and their communities. Those who will lose coverage are not 'able-bodied adults who should be working.' In Louisiana, Medicaid patients are working. In our state, 94.3% of adults who have Medicaid coverage are working either full or part-time, are ill or disabled, are taking care of their family, or are going to school. This is another burden on the tables of single-parent families, of those living with disabilities, or adults taking care of elderly relatives.

Community Health Centers are resilient, but under this additional burden on our patients, clinics, and state to comply with these changes, we know that our people will lose providers, they will lose healthcare access, and Louisiana will be worse for it."

The Louisiana Primary Care Association is incredibly disheartened to see the passage of the “One Big, Beautiful Bill Act” today in our House of Representatives. Hundreds of thousands of Community Health Center advocates across the country have raised concerns about the impact of this legislation on CHCs and their patients. CHCs are already operating under extraordinary financial pressure as they address the chronic disease epidemic with affordable, effective, and comprehensive primary care services. This legislation will add another financial challenge to an already precarious picture: CHC funding is set to expire in less than 90 days.

Today, Director of Health Policy & Governmental Affairs for LPCA, Raegan A. Carter, presented before the Press Club of Baton Rouge on the real consequences of the Senate’s current budget reconciliation bill:

Don't wait to contact U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy and Senator John Kennedy and let them know how the current Senate budget bill will affect you and your family, your work, your neighbors. The vote on this budget is happening today, and while the House established at least $700 billion in cuts to the federal Medicaid program, the Senate bill raised that number to around $930 billion.

What do these cuts mean for us? These cuts will risk critical healthcare coverage for nearly 291,000 Louisianans and billions of dollars in federal support for Louisiana. This bill will harm our healthcare industry, our state economy, and our people as it cuts a program that serves children, seniors in nursing homes, and working families.

Oversight for waste and abuse is necessary, but sweeping cuts like these will be devastating to Louisiana.

Please call Senator Bill Cassidy at (202) 224-5824 and Senator John Kennedy at (202) 224-4623.

Time is running out for our federal leaders to make positive changes for Community Health Centers, vulnerable communities, and for Louisiana! Any cuts to the Medicaid program will be harmful to our state where 1 in 3 people receive coverage from Medicaid, including children, working families, caregivers, students, disabled individuals, and seniors in nursing homes. For Community Health Centers whose patient populations are mostly covered by Medicaid, these cuts will affect their ability to maintain regular operation or even keep doors open.

Right now, it is estimated that around 137,000 patients in Louisiana will lose coverage with the current standing of the budget reconciliation bill. We need action from our federal lawmakers to protect those Louisianans and their families now.

Send an email or make a call to Senator Cassidy and Senator Kennedy at this link and let them know that we need them to protect Medicaid funding to keep Louisiana working and healthy: https://bit.ly/ActionAlert_SenateMedicaid

"In meetings on Zoom and in conference rooms across the state, a group of health care organizations and advocates have come together to form a 'collective' to sound the alarm about how these proposed federal changes could destabilize the state’s entire public health infrastructure.

That collective includes the United Way of Southeast Louisiana, the New Orleans Health Department, CrescentCare, Invest in Louisiana, Volunteers of America South Central Louisiana, Louisiana Primary Care Association, American Cancer Society - Louisiana and others.

'The people that are receiving Medicaid benefits are the most vulnerable people in the state of Louisiana,' said SarahJane Guidry, director of policy and advocacy at CrescentCare. 'Making sure that they have access to health care is essential… if we take away one of the core elements of a person's life, everything else is going to also be impacted.'"

State lawmakers — both Republican and Democrat — are sounding the alarm on proposed cuts that could strip Medicaid coverage from nearly 190,000 Louisianans.

Medicaid is a net positive for Louisiana's patients and our economy. Right now, our federal leadership is poised to cut at least $700 billion from the Medicaid program, leaving Louisiana with coverage losses and increased administrative burdens. Let our Congressional delegates and Senators know how cuts to the Medicaid program will affect you, your family, your work, and your community using our link below to send emails, make phone calls, or record a short video to send to Capitol Hill today!
