With support from the Louisiana Department of Health’s HERO Fund, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and Our Lady of Lourdes Health are helping more students become nurses by adding needed faculty.
“UL Lafayette and Our Lady of Lourdes Health found a smart way to grow the nursing pipeline. With support from the Hero Fund, they're offering stipends to attract more nursing instructors so students can train and graduate right here in Louisiana,” said LDH Undersecretary Drew Maranto.
“A lot of times people ask … Why can't we just have more nursing students? A lack of qualified faculty, and that is very typical of all nursing programs throughout the state, throughout the country,” said Lisa Broussard with UL Lafayette College of Nursing & Health Sciences.
“When looking at graduate studies, I knew that nurse education was the route that I wanted to take. Being on the floor for so long and seeing new grads coming in and knowing how exciting it can be to be a nurse, knowing that I could be a small part in being what some of my instructors were to me,” said HERO Fund recipient Lindsay Perry. “I am able to attend school and have my tuition and fees covered when that would not have been a possibility for me to be able to come back financially.”
“So by adding on four additional clinical educators, it would bring in 400 nursing students to our program,” said Sherelle James with Our Lady of Lourdes Health. "I think this is a very good investment. For years to come, it's going to help our community."
“This partnership means more jobs, stronger health care, and better access to care for people across Louisiana,” said Louisiana State Representative Tehmi Chassion.
“The HERO legislation was brought forward to fill critical needs in Louisiana's healthcare space, and it's projects just like this one that were envisioned as part of that program,” said State Senator Brach Myers, who authored the 2024 law that updated the HERO Fund. “We want to thank everybody involved, including Governor Jeff Landry’s administration.”
Applications for the next round of the HERO Fund opened Nov. 3, 2025. The application period will close on January 16, 2026.
