Louisiana Association for Justice

Louisiana Association for Justice Louisiana Association for Justice

Louisiana Association for Justice is a voluntary bar association whose statewide membership is composed mostly of lawyers who have a trial practice. Both defense and plaintiff attorneys belong to the association; however, most LAJ members represent consumer plaintiffs in civil actions. LAJ attorney-members are small business owners, maintaining a practice and supporting an office staff of fewer than 20 persons. LAJ and its members pledge to promote justice for the workplace, a clean environment and quality and affordable health care for all Americans. LAJ members and trial lawyers in general seek fairness in the courts for the aggrieved and injured and work to uphold the honor and dignity of the civil justice system and the legal profession.

Please join First Lady Donna Edwards and I in praying for the family of our friend Leah Saye Guerry, who passed away yesterday at the age of 89. Throughout her distinguished career, Leah was a determined advocate for the legal rights of Louisianans. A graduate of SMU Law School, Leah was a founder and longtime executive director of what is now known as the Louisiana Association for Justice. Her visionary leadership resulted in her earning lifetime achievement awards from the National Association of Trial Lawyer Executives and the Louisiana Democratic Party, among other honors too numerous to list. Just as importantly, she was a friend, mentor, and supporter of countless Louisianans who shared her passion to make Louisiana a better place. Our state benefited greatly from her life, work, and intellect. She will be dearly missed.

It is with the profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of Leah Saye Guerry, who was the first executive director of this association and served in that position until 2011. Leah died at her home on Saturday. She was 89.

A graduate of Southern Methodist University Law School, Leah was hired by William B. “Billy” Baggett, Sr., of Lake Charles to write the first newsletters published by our association, which began in 1953 as the Louisiana Association of Compensation and Claimant’s Attorneys. But even before Leah joined what would evolve into Louisiana Association for Justice, she had built an impressive resume and her responsibilities soon expanded to executive director. Through Leah’s efforts and those of the association’s early leaders, our organization’s membership grew.

During her career, Leah held all offices of both the National Association of Trial Lawyer Executives and the Louisiana Society of Association Executives. In 2013, NATLE permanently named for her its governmental affairs conference, which she was instrumental in creating, and it presented her with its first Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.

The American Association for Justice (then ATLA) named Leah the Outstanding Executive Director in the nation in 1989, and it honored her in 2003 with its prestigious Partnership Award. LAJ President Richard “Jerry” Dodson presented her with our association’s Stalwart Award in 2011.

Leah was one of the founding directors of the Louisiana Appleseed Center for Law and Justice. In 2012, the Louisiana Democratic Party honored her with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Our association is what it is today because of Leah. She will be greatly missed.

Mike gives you the tools to build jurors' evaluation of your client's real damages—the ones that can’t be measured by a calculator. Understanding how to use case framing, voir dire questions, witness choices, witness presentation, and closing arguments to help jurors grasp the significance of your client’s real damages and value them properly makes a big difference in your verdict. And best of all, most of these tools cost you nothing but the time and effort to put them into effect.
