"Sleep Better with Massage Therapy"

With the onset of daylight savings and the winter months approaching, many people feel off kilter which in turn can cause their sleep patterns to suffer. One way to combat the effects of sleep problems in winter months is through massage therapy. Massage therapy has been found to assist with resetting our bodies' clocks or circadian rhythms, which in turn improves sleep.

Adequate sleep is crucial to health and wellness, but millions of Americans suffer from chronic sleep problems. Insomnia or sleep difficulties can lead to obesity, substance abuse, depression or low work performance--all problems that affect a person's quality of life.

Massage Therapy for Migraines

A severe, throbbing head, nausea, vomiting, extreme sensitivity to light and sound are just a few of the signs/symptoms that migraine sufferers can experience. Some migraines creep up with no warming. Others will give a days' notice that they are on their way. According to the American Migraine Foundation, about 12% of the population suffers from migraines. Migraines sufferers are more at risk for developing anxiety, depression, sleep disorders and fatigue.

According to a study from the Touch Research Institute, 26 adults with migraines received two 30-minute massages, over five weeks, and reported a decrease in pain, more headache free days, better sleep and had an increase in serotonin levels. Studies have shown that sleep deprivation can trigger migraine headaches, so adequate sleep is important if you suffer from migraines. Massage helps to lower the stress hormone cortisol by activating the parasympathetic nervous system. The parasympathetic nervous system allows you to calm down and relax, which will allow for more hours of sleep at night.

There is no cure for migraine headaches and medications don't work for everyone. So, if you are a migraine sufferer, then it is time you give massage a try. It just might decrease the frequency and duration of your migraine attacks and allow you to get back to the things you enjoy.

Massage and PTSD
Roughly 24 million people are afflicted with post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. The disorder typically develops in people who have experienced a shocking or dangerous event, often combat related or violent abuse. Although nearly everyone has experienced trauma at some point in their lives, for PTSD sufferers, their reactions to the trauma continue over time rather than resolving naturally These people often feel stressed even when they aren't in danger.
A promising 2012 study found that veterans who received massage therapy reported significant relief from anxiety and worry, tension and irritability, and depression--all hallmarks of PTSD. Massage therapy was also reported to provide specific benefits to clients with PTSD--giving them a feeling of safety, comfort and control. Trust and safety seem to be the two words most focused on for clients with PTSD, and massage therapists are in the unique to build this trust with their clients.

Massage Therapy Can Help These 5 Painful Conditions"
Pain can negatively affect your quality of life if left untreated. The American Massage Therapy Association shares how massage therapy is proven to manage pain associated with a variety of injuries and conditions.
1. Low-back pain. Several studies have shown that massage therapy may be effective for certain kinds of chronic low-back pain, especially when combined with exercise and other types of rehabilitation. By helping to reduce chronic pain, it may decrease reliance of anti-inflammatory drugs for pain control.
2. Neck pain. Massage therapy can help decrease particular types of neck pain. A recent study showed that multiple massages per week could help decrease chronic pain and improve some day-to-day functions.
3. Arthritis. Those suffering from osteoarthritis with chronic pain or limited mobility may find that massage helps their pain and improves their function.
4. Fibromyalgia. While the cause of fibromyalgia is uncertain, massage is one form of treatment that has found short-term success with some individuals. It may help improve pain and quality of life, especially when combined with other treatments.
5. Sports injury and recovery. Massage therapy may be of benefit to athletes of all fitness levels. Some studies have indicated that massage therapy may help reduce muscle soreness, stiffness and fatigue and may be related to improved recovery after certain types of exercise.

Massage therapy is one of many ways to cope with stress, and treat anxiety and depression.
Some people mistakenly believe that massage therapy is only for pampering yourself. While this is true for some people, it also helps manage anxiety, depression and insomnia.
Physical benefits of massage
A massage does more than just feel good. It can lower the amount of cortisol in your body. This hormone is produced when your body is stressed. It increases glucose in your bloodstream, enhances your brain's use of glucose and curbs functions that are nonessential in a fight-or-flight situation.
A one-hour massage lowers cortisol in your body while also releasing serotonin. This hormone neurotransmitter is sometimes called the "happy chemical" because it reduces feelings of depression and carries signals between nerves and your body. By lowering cortisol and increasing serotonin, you're boosting your body's ability to fight off pain, anxiety and feelings of sadness.
Also, massage could be considered an hourlong hug, as it can fulfill the need for human contact and comforting touch. A session provides you with a nurturing safe place to physically rest.

Benefits of massage
Massage is generally considered part of integrative medicine. It's increasingly being offered along with standard treatment for a wide range of medical conditions and situations.

Massage benefits can include:

Reducing stress and increasing relaxation
Reducing pain and muscle soreness and tension
Improving circulation, energy and alertness
Lowering heart rate and blood pressure
Improving immune function
While more research is needed to confirm the benefits of massage, some studies have found massage may also be helpful for:

Anxiety
Digestive disorders
Fibromyalgia
Headaches
Insomnia related to stress
Low back pain
Myofascial pain syndrome
Nerve pain
Soft tissue strains or injuries
Sports injuries
Temporomandibular joint pain
Upper back and neck pain
Beyond the benefits for specific conditions or diseases, some people enjoy massage because it often produces feelings of caring, comfort and connection.

Despite its benefits, massage isn't meant as a replacement for regular medical care. Let your doctor know you're trying massage and be sure to follow any standard treatment plans you have.
