Many parents walk out of a parent-teacher conference hearing something like:

“They’ll probably grow out of it.”
“That’s just how boys are.”
“They just need a little more time.”

And sometimes that is true. Children develop at different rates.

But when concerns about attention, listening, behavior, or learning keep coming up, it’s worth paying attention to those patterns.

Early identification is incredibly important because the earlier we understand what might be contributing to those challenges, the easier it is to support the skills children need to succeed in the classroom.

If you’re hearing concerns from a teacher and noticing similar things at home, trust that instinct and consider speaking with a professional who can help determine whether those concerns are developmentally appropriate.

The team behind DTS… 👶👧🧒💗

Did your child’s teacher bring up something during your parent-teacher conference that wasn’t on your radar?

This happens more often than parents think.

The classroom environment places very different demands on children than the home environment. At school, children are expected to follow group directions, transition quickly between activities, stay engaged during lessons, and manage social interactions with peers.

Because of those demands, teachers may sometimes notice challenges that parents don’t see as clearly at home.

If a concern comes up during your conference, one helpful follow-up question to ask is:

“Can you tell me what that looks like during the school day?”

That question often helps teachers give specific examples, which can give parents much better insight into what their child is experiencing in the classroom.

This is Day 2 of our Parent-Teacher Conference series. Tomorrow we’ll talk about why academic concerns don’t always mean a child isn’t trying or isn’t motivated.

Comment SCREENER 👇 Before you medicate the behavior!

Be sure you’ve evaluated the processing.
This is not anti-medication.
This is pro-accuracy.

When a child is:
• Fidgety. • Distracted
• Forgetful with directions
• Melting down after school
• Struggling academically despite effort

It’s easy to focus on behavior.

But behavior is often the signal — not the root.

If the brain is struggling to:
• Filter background noise. • Discriminate similar sounds. • Hold onto verbal instructions. • Process language quickly

Then attention will look inconsistent.
Effort will look uneven. Regulation will look fragile.

Medication can calm symptoms.
It does not teach the brain how to process sound more efficiently.

And if auditory processing hasn’t been evaluated yet… you may be managing the smoke instead of addressing the fire.

Auditory Processing Disorder is real.
It is measurable.
And it can be remediated with targeted intervention.

Before starting down a long-term medication path, rule out what can be corrected.

Comment “SCREENER” and we’ll send you our free Auditory Processing Screener so you can decide whether a full AP evaluation is the next right step.

Let’s make sure we’re treating the right problem.

Parent-teacher conferences are coming up, and if you already have concerns about your child’s learning or development, this is a great opportunity to connect what you’re seeing at home with what teachers see at school.

As developmental therapists, here are 3 questions we often recommend parents ask:

1️⃣ When do you notice my child struggling most during the day?
2️⃣ How do they interact with peers during group activities or free play?
3️⃣ What strategies help them stay engaged or regulated in the classroom?

Comparing observations between home and school can be incredibly helpful in understanding whether concerns are something to monitor or something to explore further.

If you’d like our Parent-Teacher Conference Question Guide, comment GUIDE below and our team will send it to you.

Tomorrow we’ll talk about what to do if a teacher raises concerns that weren’t on your radar yet.
