The Cajun, long recognized as one of the most popular wheelchair tournaments worldwide, is a "Super Series" level event, just one step below the Grand Slams. Along with it's Open Division, the Cajun hosts recreational and junior player divisions. There are four Super Series tournaments in the world, and only one in the United States. It all began in 1983 in Natchez, MS, when local tennis player and high school tennis coach, Jeanie Peabody, wanted to help her godchild, Laura Pritchartt return to an active lifestyle and play tennis after becoming a quadriplegic from a car accident. In an effort to increase awareness and participation in the community, Jeanie brought the tournament to Baton Rouge and thus, the BRWTA and the Cajun Classic were formed. Our “all volunteer” organization gives men and women paraplegics, quadriplegics, amputees, and others with mobility disabilities self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment through the sport of wheelchair tennis. We reach those recently wheelchair bound to elite athletes preparing for the Paralympics.
