A stroke happens when blood flow to part of the brain is blocked or reduced, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and nutrients. There are two main types — ischemic (caused by a blockage) and hemorrhagic (caused by bleeding).
Here are some of the most common causes and risk factors:
➕ Medical Causes
High blood pressure (hypertension): The #1 cause of strokes. It damages blood vessel walls over time.
High cholesterol: Can lead to plaque buildup in arteries, causing blockages.
Heart disease & atrial fibrillation: Irregular heart rhythms can lead to clots that travel to the brain.
Diabetes: Damages blood vessels and increases clot risk.
Previous stroke or TIA (mini-stroke): Increases likelihood of another.
➕ Lifestyle Risk Factors
Smoking: Thickens blood and damages arteries.
Excessive alcohol use: Raises blood pressure and can damage the heart.
Physical inactivity & obesity: Increase blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes risk.
Unhealthy diet: Diets high in salt, sugar, and saturated fats raise stroke risk.
➕ Other Factors
Age: Risk increases after 55.
Family history: Genetics can play a role.
S*x: Men are slightly more likely to have a stroke, but women are more likely to die from one.
Would you know what to do if someone was having a stroke? 🧠
