Alyssa Schell practices on herself with a nasometer (picture 1). The nasometer, held here by Ainsley Barker (picture 2) is a device that measures the flow of air through the nose. Air should only come out of the nose when producing the m, n, and ng sounds; if air leaves the nose during other sounds, it signifies a condition known as hypernasality. MA students often practice with undergraduate students to gain hands-on experience before assessing a client (picture 3).

Meet Adam Hogan, a PhD student in the LSU COMD department! (Slide 1)

He is pursuing his Ph.D. in the area of Bilingualism to improve clinical services for bilingual individuals. (Slide 2)

He chose the LSU program because LSU prepares their students for the competitive job market and the diverse linguistic communities in the state of Louisiana.

While at LSU, he has worked with undergraduate students investigating the speech sound productions of adults and children living in a Vietnamese-English household. In the third slide, he explains his findings.

We hope you enjoyed reading about our wonderful Ph.D. student and cannot wait to continue sharing more about our students.

Today we are spotlighting Dr. Johari, who runs the Human Neurophysiology and Neuromodulation Lab. He investigates the neural correlates of speech and limb motor control as well as patients with Parkinson's disease. Picture 1 shows him with his PhD student Ella Tabari in front of a multitude of Dr. Johari’s publications, while picture 2 shows Ella preparing an EEG cap to monitor brain waves. Dr. Johari and Ella then analyze data collected from the EEG (picture 3)

Today we are highlighting Dr. Mohapatra's Aphasia Behavior Communication Lab! (slide 1)

In her lab, the research conducted pertains to neuropsychophysiological measurement of cognitive behavior, biofeedback training, complementary-alternative practices, and remote interventions in Aphasia rehabilitation.

The second photo captures Biraj, a PhD student in the ABC research lab mentoring student assistant Yu Yang during training with an fNIRS device.

In the third photo, Biraj is analyzing brain imaging data, and the fourth photo displays equipment for brain imaging research.

Research participation in laboratories is a fantastic opportunity for students to gain hands-on learning experiences and skills development.

Thank you for all of your hard work Dr. Mohapatra. We are so proud of you!

The department would like to spotlight our alum Miss Madeline Johnson!

Madeline is a 25 year old Speech-Language Pathologist who has been highlight on the WBRZ Channel 2 news post for providing haircuts to those with sensory and physical disabilities.

She graduated LSU Baton Rouge SLP graduate program in December 2023, and in January 2025, she created Miss Madeline’s, which is a sensory based hair cutting service for all people with special needs and disabilities. Madeline completed her apprenticeship and her Barber’s License at the same time as finishing grad school.

Madeline always knew the two skills would eventually come together. For many years, Madeline worked with a young boy with Down syndrome where she developed
a love to help those with special needs. She is currently seeing clients on “Sensory Sundays” at Salon du Sud on Bluebonnet., where people of any age and physical ability are welcome. Congratulations Madeline, and we are so proud of you!
