Alyssa Schell practices on herself with a nasometer (picture 1). The nasometer, held here by Ainsley Barker (picture 2) is a device that measures the flow of air through the nose. Air should only come out of the nose when producing the m, n, and ng sounds; if air leaves the nose during other sounds, it signifies a condition known as hypernasality. MA students often practice with undergraduate students to gain hands-on experience before assessing a client (picture 3).
