“Yesterday, I had cataract surgery on my right eye at the Eye Care Surgery Center in Mandeville. I’ll tell you about it. But first- let me share this. Last year, when my eye doctor said, ‘I cannot correct your vision anymore’, I knew it was time to do something else. The thought of my vision debilitating further and further to blindness was something that I could not emotionally or mentally process. Sepia light every morning was all I knew for years. Blurry and rather yellow. Not horrible but not true. And now, a quiet explosion of beautiful light I can see this morning! It’s silvery, a cool crystal gray light, and it sparkles white! So far, it is the first big difference in my sight 24 hours after Dr. Jennifer Olds removed the hard cover of cataracts with a simple, noninvasive surgery. It took about 20 minutes. This is the one surgery where you get to keep your clothes and shoes on! The staff of nurses were nonstop in my stall. They came in with everything from forms and questions to warm blankets and encouraging, calming words and funny stories. Regular lovely people. And a welcome sight - each of them! Surgical centers tend to be on the chilly side for practical reasons hence the warm blankets while you wait for your spin into the OR. But more so, it was their warm words of ‘what can I get you’, ‘how do you feel’, ‘are you comfortable’ ‘you’re going to see the difference in your eyesight right away’ that also touched me. I knew I was in good hands. I’m taking the time to write this for those who wonder or maybe feel trepidation about the idea of cataract surgery. I was one of you. After all, who enjoys the idea of anyone touching your eyes?! Today, 24 hours post-op, I could not recommend anything more to anyone. I will return to eye care surgery in two weeks for my left eye. I know now not to be anxious and fearful. I know what the results will be most people do not have to go back to wearing glasses or lenses of any kind after this surgery. What a blessing I have to always be searching for your glasses or worrying if your contact lenses moved or popped out. If cataract surgery is on your horizon, give the Eye Care Surgery Center in Mandeville a call. They’ll walk you through everything. Wonderful, wonderful healthcare. Mary Sheppard”
