HIV stigma refers to the irrational or negative attitudes, behaviors, and judgments directed toward people living with or affected by HIV — often leading to serious impacts on mental health. Together, we can help end HIV stigma by choosing our words carefully, showing empathy, and promoting understanding. A more intentional and proactive conversation starts with us.

This Black History Month, we honor Dr. Alexa Irene Canady, the first African American woman neurosurgeon in the United States.
Dr. Canady's journey wasn’t always easy—she nearly dropped out of college as an undergraduate. But she regained her confidence and went on to break barriers in medicine. For 14 years, Dr. Canaday served as Chief of Neurosurgery at Children’s Hospital of Michigan. In her time there, she was inducted into the Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame, named Teacher of the Year, and received two honorary degrees.

Our Story

To better our efforts at reducing the impact of HIV in our community, HAART is now a service line of Open Health Care Clinic. Not only does this mean more resources, but it means patients will receive more holistic care from pediatrics, to dental, to endocrinology care, as well as the STD/HIV prevention and treatment currently provided.

We launched our new HAART Clinic brand in February 2020. The new clinic space located at 3849 North Blvd., Baton Rouge, LA features four exam rooms and an onsite lab. The building also houses Open Health’s Social Services Department.
