18 week training block, hundreds of miles and 80 hours to get to my first marathon start line. It didn't go as I hoped but I finished, learned what to do differently...soaked up Chicago. It was an amazing city, incredible experience with more joy, energy and support from strangers than I could ever imagine. 54,000 runners, one million spectators. I am amazed that the charity runners raised over 30 million dollars, with the raising over 1.3 million for Alzheimers research and support.

This morning I drank coffee from Brazil brewed with a cinnamon stick from India. For dinner I had Mexican style street corn and salmon grilled on cedar plank so similar that someone from this part of the world 1000 years ago would probably recognize it, except it was seasoned with Ethiopian berbere. For dessert: wine from South Africa and the sweetest tajin spiced Californian nectarines. All while sitting in my back yard watching squirrels play and listening to children play next door as they spoke Russian.

I get to do this, savor these delicious foods because of immigrants in this melting pot of a country. This access to flavor, culture, music, and art should be celebrated everyday and encouraged not dragged out, tear gassed, stomped on and extinguished.

In the span of two days this week my kiddo brought me coffee in bed and then called me embarrassing for having a solo Whitney Houston dance party while cooking dinner. Parenting is such a journey, here to challenge everything you feel and think about yourself.

My relationship with running began when I became a mom. Taking stroller walks and jogs with my little baby was key to my mental health postpartum. Now 9+ years later I celebrated Mother's Day weekend with a half marathon. Honoring my body, my needs and strength continues to be crucial in how I show up for myself and my son. @

With all of the turmoil in the world and life, this is a great time to take on a personal challenge that will require a lot of focus...like training for a marathon. It's great for mental health to move your body, be outdoors, push yourself, set goals and do the hard thing, and take space from the internet.

I missed yesterday but everyday ought to be mental health day. The interplay of mental health, physical health, trauma and healthy relationships is well documented. Do something for your future health and take time to think about where your mental health is and reach out to a local provider if you need.
