In honor of Women's History Month, join us in celebrating Mary!

Mary Nau was born in August 1938 in Cheyenne, Wyoming. An only child, she was raised in a close-knit city of just 20,000 residents during the 1940s. Her childhood was filled with rodeos and memorable train trips with her parents as they traveled to visit her many aunts and uncles.

Mary pursued her education at the University of Wyoming and Colorado Women’s College. In her twenties, she worked as an elementary school teacher before dedicating herself to raising her three children, twin sons and a daughter.

In 1963, Mary moved to Republic, Missouri, where she settled on a 40-acre farm. Demonstrating a lifelong commitment to learning and service, she returned to school in her forties to become a licensed professional counselor. Her career included work as a home visitor with the Greene County Health Department, leadership of the WIC Program, and later a counseling role in the Family Preservation Unit at Burrell Mental Health Center.

Mary has always been deeply involved in her church community, contributing to children’s programming, the church library, and coordinating recycling initiatives. She was also an active member of the National Organization for Women and volunteered for many years with the Safe to Sleep program, supporting homeless women.

Today, Mary remains close to her family, especially her son Chris and daughter-in-law Susie, and her daughter Marie. She is the proud grandmother of seven grandchildren and a great-grandmother to two great-grandsons.
