Friday evening, May 8, 2026 several members joined friends & Family to honor a remarkable nurse.
Holly Reed, LPN left us entirely too soon.
Shortly after graduation, Holly started working at Applebee's and welcomed her first son, Mason. During Mason’s younger years, they spent a great deal of time at Arkansas Children's Hospital. That was probably where the very first seed was planted for what would become Holly’s true calling.
Holly knew she wanted more for herself and her children. She wanted an education, a purpose, and a career where she could pour her love for people into something meaningful. So she enrolled in nursing school at Pulaski Technical College. Holly was a natural.
Holly made juggling nursing school, a full-time job, and raising a young children look easy.
After graduation, Holly began her nursing career at CHI St. Vincent Rehabilitation Hospital. Over the years, she worked in several areas of nursing including pain management, the clinic at the Air Force Base, and Jefferson Regional Medical Center. But somewhere along the way, Holly discovered where her heart truly belonged — caring for the elderly at Cavalier Healthcare of England did.
Starting as a floor nurse, Holly quickly earned the respect of everyone around her. Residents adored her. Coworkers trusted her. Families felt comforted by her.
Before long, she advanced to Treatment Nurse, where she became exceptionally skilled in wound care and peritoneal dialysis. She took pride in healing wounds, but truthfully, she was even prouder when she could prevent them from happening in the first place.
She was the nurse other nurses went to for help. She later became Assistant Director of Nursing. Holly encouraged people to do their best, but she also knew how to keep folks laughing while doing it.
Holly did more than come to work. She made a difference. She filled hallways with laughter. She loved her residents and coworkers like family. She noticed when somebody was struggling and somehow always knew exactly what they needed — whether it was a hug, encouragement, or one of her sarcastic little comments that would make you laugh when you were trying your best not to.
And then there were those days after a full moon, when absolutely everything that could go wrong somehow did. Holly would remind everyone to “Stop. Breathe. Regroup. We’ll do better tomorrow." She had a way of putting life back into perspective.
Even during her own battle, she never lost her sense of humor. Never lost the part of herself that made others feel safe and steady.
Her coworkers described her as devoted, nurturing, sassy, and fun-loving. Many said she was the backbone of Cavalier — the first person everyone turned to when they needed advice or reassurance.
Holly inspired her sister Jennifer to pursue a career in nursing too, although Jennifer will quickly tell you nursing school was not as easy as Holly had made it look all those years.
Above every title Holly ever carried — nurse, treatment nurse, ADON, mentor, coworker — the role she treasured most was being a mother.
Life is going to feel very different now. But Holly would want you to keep showing up for life the same way she did. Keep getting up even when your heart feels heavy. Keep loving people. Keep taking care of each other.
Find her strength in one another.
Find her spirit in the warmth of the sun against your face.
And with every changing season, know that her love is still surrounding you.
Because nursing was never just charts, medications, treatments, or care plans to Holly.
It was presence. It was compassion.
It was sitting beside someone during the hardest moments of their life so they would not feel alone.
And that kind of love never really leaves us.
Legacy Keepers Nurse Honor Guard of Arkansas would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Smith Family Funeral Homes and to Holly’s beautiful family for entrusting us with the privilege of honoring her life and legacy.
It is never something we take lightly to stand beside a family during such a sacred moment. To be invited to honor a nurse who dedicated her life to caring for others is truly one of the greatest honors our organization can receive.
Thank you for allowing us to share Holly’s story, celebrate her servant’s heart, and recognize all she meant to the nursing profession and to the countless lives she touched along the way.
