Bobby Overstreet, age 68, of Hazlehurst passed away Tuesday, September 9, 2025 at his residence.

Mr. Overstreet was born November 23, 1956 in Appling County to the late Evans Overstreet, Sr. and the late Cleo Jewell Yawn Overstreet. He was a retired contractor with Local 256. Bobby enjoyed hunting and watching old tv shows, especially the Andy Griffith Show, Three Stooges and Sanford & Son. He was preceded by three brothers, Colon Overstreet, Jackie Overstreet, Sr, and Donnie Overstreet and a nephew, Nicolas Overstreet.

Survivors include his wife, Karen Overstreet of Hazlehurst; daughters, Melissa Overstreet Sweat of Hazlehurst and Shree Johnson of Baxley; grandchildren, Scarlett Elizabeth Sweat and Grayson Loran Brigman both of Hazlehurst; sisters, Betty Jo Smith of South Carolina; brothers, Evans Jr. (Janell) Overstreet and Terry (Sharon) Overstreet both of Alma, Billy (Judy) Overstreet of Cordele, Dale Overstreet and Tommy Overstreet both of Baxley, and Larry (Patricia) Overstreet of Surrency. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A graveside service will be held Friday, September 12, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at Oakview Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Charles Carter officiating.

Active pallbearers will be Stephen Griffin, Darrin McDaniel, Jeremy Adams, Corey Googe, Duke Campbell, Jr., David Googe and Kevin Thomas.

Visitation will be held on Friday from 12:00 until 1:30 p.m. at Swain Funeral Home.

Janie Beecher Carter

Janie Beecher Carter, age 91, of Baxley passed away Thursday, September 4, 2025 at Lakeview Retirement Center under the care of Regency Southern Care Hospice.

Mrs. Carter was born December 5, 1933 in Appling County to the late Ollie Beecher and the late Jessie Mae Wedincamp Beecher. She was a teacher and retired from the Appling County Board of Education. During her 38-year career, she taught at Screven Co. Elementary School, Appling Co. Elementary School, Surrency Elementary School, Fourth District Elementary School, Appling Co. Jr. High School and then 7 years at Altamaha Technical College. After retirement, she worked as a substitute teacher at Altamaha Elementary School and Glennville Elementary School and served on the Appling Co. Board of Education. Mrs. Carter was a member of the Appling Co. Retired Educators, Appling Co. Young Farmers, and the Pilot Club of Baxley. She was a member of Zion Missionary Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. James W. Carter; brothers, Jesse and Howard Beecher; great granddaughter, Piper Carter, and son-in-law, Kenyon Lamb.

Mrs. Carter loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed working in her flowers, eating out, and crocheting, specifically making throws for all her grandchildren. She also enjoyed listening to gospel music.

Survivors include her daughters, Patricia C. Lamb of Jesup, Debi Hendrix (Ronnie Crosby) of Baxley; sons, Dale Carter of Baxley and Stephen (Janet E.) Carter of Surrency, sister-in-law, JoAnn Beecher of Baxley; grandchildren, Jason (Christy) Carter and Darby Carter, Andrew (Megan) Hendrix, Matthew Hendrix, Daniel (Rebecca) Carter, Joshua (Brooke) Carter, Megan Atkinson (Brian Twiggs), and Malanda (Dustin) Johnson; fourteen great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law also survive.

Funeral services will be held Monday September 8, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Zion Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Wayne Williamson and Rev. Rick Brown officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jason Carter, Andrew Hendrix, Matthew Hendrix, Daniel Carter, Joshua Carter, and Dustin Johnson.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ima Dean Sapp, Mattie Nails, the Adult Sunday School Class of Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Caregivers of Lakeview Retirement Center and Regency Southern Care Hospice.

Visitation will be held on Sunday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Swain Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Regency Southern Care Hospice (2311 East First Street Suite B, Brice Square, Vidalia, GA 30574), Lakeview Retirement Center (111 Stephens Ave. Baxley, GA 31513), or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital (501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959).

Carl Milton Hunter

Carl Milton Hunter, age 91, of Baxley passed away peacefully on September 5, 2025 at Appling Healthcare under the care of Comfort Care Hospice.

Mr. Hunter was born December 19, 1933 in Baxley to the late Henry Edison and Luna Carter Hunter. He was employed by the Appling County Board of Education as a school bus driver for 51 years and was also a lifelong farmer. He was a devoted husband to JoAnn Hunter for 70 years and loving father to Randy (Linda) Hunter and Tanya (Jeff) Williams of Baxley and Ramey (Jennifer) Hunter of Forsyth. Throughout his life, Mr. Hunter offered kindness, wisdom and a steady presence to those around him.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Hunter was preceded in death by his five sisters and five brothers.

Along with his loving wife and three children, survivors include grandchildren, Crystal (Dallas) LeDuff, Landry (Celine) Hunter, Mackenzie (Kristi) Williams, Matt (Hannah) Hunter, Hunter (Ashley) Williams, Chelsea (Kevin) Powell; and great grandchildren, Avery LeDuff, Davis LeDuff, Carter Hunter, Walker Hunter, John Thomas Kile, Will Bennett, Hudson Hunter, Hollis Hunter, Hartlie Hunter, Adeline Williams, Owen Williams, Benson Powell, Lawson Powell and Eason Powell.

Though he may be gone, his stories, lessons and love will live on forever in the hearts of his family and friends and we will hold him close in our heart always.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, September 7, 2025 at 3:00 p.m. at Midway Baptist Church with Rev. Wayne Williamson, Rev. Ron Ross and Rev. Brannen Pate officiating. Interment will follow in Midway Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers include Matt Hunter, Hunter Williams, Jimmy Hunter, James Hunter, Dallas LeDuff and Landry Hunter.

Honorary pallbearers include all in attendance.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at Midway Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to Midway Baptist Church 174 Midway Church Road, Baxley, GA 31513.

Johnny M. Moody, age 86, of Hazlehurst passed away Tuesday, September 2, 2025 at Lumber City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Mr. Moody was born July 18, 1939 in Snipesville to the late Hyman Moody and the late Bertie Johnson Moody. He was a veteran of the United States Navy where he served 24 years and was a Lieutenant Commander. Mr. Moody was preceded in death by twelve siblings and a grandson, Jonathan Bourne.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Moody; daughters, Patricia Bourne, Elizabeth Cole and Kathleen Willbanks; four grandchildren also survive.

Hershel Marvin "Mark" Miles, age 63, of Hazlehurst passed away Wednesday, August 27, 2025 at Meadows Memorial Health in Vidalia.

Mr. Miles was born July 26, 1962 in Jeff Davis County to the late Donald Miles and the late Mary Louise Cravey Miles. He worked as a mechanic for many years, and considered his grandkids his biggest blessing. He was the security guard at the Cadillac Ranch.

Survivors include his sons, Justin (Jessica) Miles and Chris (Caitlin) Miles both of Hazlehurst; brothers, Terry Miles, Randall Miles, and Russell (Sonya) Miles all of Hazlehurst. Four grandchildren, Landon Miles, Olivia Miles, Kailynn Miles, and Harper Miles all of Hazlehurst, also survive.

Funeral services will be held Friday, August 29, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at Oakland Baptist Church with Rev. Royce Hulett officiating.

Interment will follow in Oakland Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Austin Bellah, Dustin Bellah, Jake Bellah, Tyler Miles, Kelvin Bohannon, and Grant Miles.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the time of the service.

Barbara Orvin Yawn, age 67, of Baxley passed away Saturday, August 23, 2025 at Memorial Health in Savannah.

Mrs. Yawn was born September 21 , 1957 in Appling County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mickey Orvin, father, Rozel J. Murphy, and brother, Damon Murphy. Mrs. Yawn was a member of Sand Hill Free Will Baptist Church and retired from Great American Insurance. She was devoted to her family, especially her children and grandchildren, and was the best cook in the world!

Survivors include her husband, Donald Yawn; sons, Brandon (Hailey) Orvin and Justin (Alex) Orvin; stepsons, Scott (Leah) Yawn and Brent (Stephanie) Yawn; her mother, Sue Callaway Murphy; Five grandchildren, River, Chloe, Isla, Harbor, Emmaline and four step grandchildren, Josh, Ashleigh, Kaylee and Abby also survive.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 27, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at Sand Hill Creek Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Gary Page, Rev. Bobby Bentley, Rev. Pet Hayes and Rev. Wayne Smith officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Lantz Orvin, Michael Page, Andy Orvin, Wink Branch, Willie Beecher, Shawn Johnson and Cason Clance.

Visitation will be held Tuesday evening, from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m., at Swain Funeral Home.

Erma Jean Herndon Davis, age 70, of Baxley passed away Saturday, August 16, 2025 at her residence under the care of Regency Southern Care Hospice.

Mrs. Davis was born December 15, 1954 in Appling County to the late Joseph Earnest Herndon, Jr. and the late Sara Nell Bass Herndon. She was a faithful pastor’s wife and member of Unity Baptist Church. Mrs. Davis was a member of the Appling County High School Class of 1972. She was a retired paraprofessional with Appling County Board of Education and a member of the Appling County Retired Educators. Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by her son, Allen Davis, daughter, Allison Davis, sisters, Sue (Mickey) Davis and Jeanette Herndon, and brothers-in-law, Alvin Lewis and Jim Davis.

Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Rev. Charles A. Davis of Baxley; sons, Jamie (Brandi) Davis of Cochran and Stacy (Brooke) Davis of Uvalda; sisters, Martha Lewis of Warner Robins and Shirley (Mike) Hallman; brother, Jay (Linda) Herndon of Hazlehurst and Danny (Celes) Herndon of Ellabell; grandsons, Brendan Davis and Liam Davis both of Cochran; and father-in-law, Roscoe Davis of Baxley. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 19, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. from the Chapel of Swain Funeral Home with Rev. Justin McLellan and Rev. Rick Brown officiating. Interment will follow in Zion Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be David Hunter, Dane Hunter, Galen Davis, Joseph Herndon, Adam Herndon, Keith Lewis, and Joseph Frazier.

Nicholas Dale Overstreet, age 46, of Vidalia, passed away on Wednesday, August 13, 2025 at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Nick was born December 25, 1978 in Appling County. He graduated from Appling County Comprehensive High School in 1997 and pursued his secondary education at Valdosta State University where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in 2001 and a master’s degree in public administration in 2002. While at V.S.U, he was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity. He also received a Certified Public Manager Degree from the University of Georgia in 2021. He served as City Manager for the City of Alma (2008-2016) and the City of Vidalia (2016-2023). Nick was a member of the Rotary Club of Vidalia, Alma Lion’s Club, and served as a board member of the Valdosta State University Alumni Association. He was currently employed as a program manager with Roberts Civil Engineering. In addition to his distinguished career as a public servant, Nick was known as being a great friend and encourager to all who knew him. He was a devoted family man who loved his wife and children immensely and was a di-hard Florida Gator Fan. He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Lucy Overstreet.

Survivors include his wife of 18 years, Jennifer Lynn Overstreet of Vidalia; sons, Maddox Overstreet and Knox Overstreet both of Vidalia; father, Dale Overstreet of Baxley; sister, Jessica Overstreet of Tifton; parents-in-law, Henry & Donna Morris; sister-in-law, Lindsey (Steve) Johns of McRae; and David (Kaleigh) Douglas of Alma. Several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, & cousins also survive.

Funeral services will be held Monday, August 18, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. from the Chapel of Swain Funeral Home with Rev. Rick Brown, Rev. Calvin Morris and Rev. David Deen officiating. Interment will follow Hopewell Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be John Cole, Cody Guined, Matt Beecher, David Douglas, Justin Orvin and Andy Woodruff.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 17, 2025 from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at Swain Funeral Home.

Greg Anthony Previto, age 69, of Baxley and formerly of Suffolk, VA, passed away Tuesday, August 12, 2025 at his residence.

Mr. Previto was born on July 4, 1956 in Mobile, Alabama to the late Joseph Previto and the late Grace Graham Previto. He worked as a civil engineer with the Army Corp of Engineers. He was a model airplane and train hobbyist and was a member of Bethlehem Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Previto of Baxley, mother-in-law, Cherry Morris of Baxley; sister-in-law, Beth (Mike) McPherson of Kamas, UT; niece, Caroline McPherson of Baton Rouge, LA; nephew, Carter McPherson of Manhattan, NY; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins also survive.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 16, 2025 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Swain Funeral Home with Rev. Bryan Gill and Rev. Ryan Lamb officiating.

Earnest Clyde Ansley, age 83, of Baxley passed away Wednesday, August 6, 2025 at his residence.

Mr. Ansley was born November 20, 1941 in Appling County to the late John Clifford Ansley and the late Ina Kight Ansley. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Dianne Dell Ansley, and son, Mark Allen Ansley. Mr. Ansley retired from Plant Hatch and was a welder and carpenter. He attended Woodlawn Baptist Church.

Survivors include his sons, Jason (Brittany) Ansley of Evans and Daniel (Nancy) Ansley of Baxley; sister, Sue Thomas of Baxley; brother, Cliff Ansley of Inverness, FL; and grandchildren, Sierra McCall, Megan Ansley, Christian Ansley, Emily McFeely, Madeline Williams, Ashley Bryant, Branden Bryant, Riley Horne, and Damian Ansley.

A private family graveside service will be held at Appling Memorial Gardens.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Scotty Turner, Allen Turner, Pam Sharpe, Jamie Sharpe, Andy Arnold, Dusty Arnold, DaNeil Sharpe, Greg Thomas, Debra Lawrence, Keith Thomas, and members of Woodlawn Baptist Church.
