"They said they'd reverse my shoulder??"

As we age, osteoarthritis of the shoulder can cause significant stiffness, pain, and reduced quality of life. Once you decide to move forward with a shoulder replacement, your surgeon may suggest a reverse replacement for you. But what does this mean?

In a reverse replacement, the ball and socket joints are reversed. This is done in people without an adequate rotator cuff as it changes the arm's mechanical axis and allows it to function without a cuff. In this implant, the deltoid is the main instigator of shoulder movement.

At OOI, we evaluate each patient to assess which implant is best for them. This allows us to further customize your care so you can recover quickly and live your life as pain-free as possible, while enjoying your normal activities.

Our expert shoulder surgeons answer frequently asked questions about reverse total shoulder replacement surgery.
