If your office needs BLS CPR, I highly recommend John Cobb and CEMSCPR! John did our training again last night at Crossroads Volunteer Fire Dept, and as previous sessions, it was great. There are a couple of things that have changed in the AHA standards, but the one constant hasn’t, high quality CPR saves lives! John has all the tools and brings them to use, including AED simulators. He is on Facebook, check them out for all your medical training needs.

After fielding a couple of questions about a One-Time Compliance report for the Amalgam Separator, I reached out to the Controlling Authority for Alabama. It was thought to be the EPA, but as I found out it is ADEM. I emailed Mr. Ramsey some questions about enforcement, and the compliance report. Below is the response and a link to the Alabama One-Time Compliance Report. If you have questions, give me a call , send me an email or text, I will be glad to help.

The Department has not determined how and when the dental offices will get inspected. It could be if we see high levels of metals in a POTW’s discharge that we check the dental offices in the area to determine compliance with the rule. It could be that the local POTW will be checking on the dental offices to determine compliance with the rule. This is a new rule for us and we are trying to implement our program as we go. The dental office is expected to comply with the rule and set its own Best Management Practices; whether that be checking the filter daily or weekly or a different frequency. The goal is to eliminate Mercury from being discharged into the local POTW and potentially causing water quality exceedances. I have attached a link to the Department’s Compliance Report below. The mandate to have an Amalgam Separator installed by 14 Jul 2020 has not yet been eased. With that being said, the prices are only going to go up. Special price on the Solmetex HG-5 is $475 retail. After the special goes away, back up to $860 retail. If you are planning on having one installed before the 14th of Jul, please remember to use a vacuum line cleaner daily for at least 2 weeks. If you do not, you will fill up a $338 filter very quickly. If you have any questions, or would like some help, give me a call or message me.

There are many questions out there about aerosol removal in the operatory during a procedure. Some products are self supportive, while others use current equipment. One thought and warning. If you are going to use your current suction pump, please remember to consider the maximum number of users it can support. The added amount of flow required by the adding the HVE valve for hygiene, and then some of these devices, you may exceed the capacity of flow produced by your vacuum, leading to weak suction, and failure in removing the aerosol.

With all the craziness going on and the hustle to take all the precautionary steps to reopen, do not forget to get your amalgam separator installed. The date to be compliant is still 14 July and no change to that date has been mentioned. If you are waiting to have your unit installed, remember it is recommended that you clean the vacuum lines everyday for at least 2 weeks with a non-foaming enzymatic cleaner with a neutral ph factor. If your office hasn’t purchased an amalgam separator, give me a call, I have some Solmetex NXT Hg5 separators in stock.
