Nothing beats the feeling I get when I am able to help someone feel better. I am blown away sometimes by the expressions of gratitude that I receive from my patients. This one is special as it came after I provided an injection to a patient of mine with debilitating back pain due to facet degeneration and a large synovial cyst. A few days later he was 90% pain free and he could straighten out and walk and start exercising again.

Helping people find relief from pain is my purpose as a physician. One of the most rewarding procedures I sometimes perform is a percutaneous balloon kyphoplasty. My patient had significant nonstop back pain after an injury which resulted in a fracture in her spine. The fracture had led to bone loss and collapse of one of her thoracic bones or vertebra. After a few weeks of minimal relief with pain medicines and a back brace for support , I performed this procedure. Using xray guidance and minimally invasive instruments , I was able to insert a small balloon into the fractured bone which helped to elevate the vertebra. After that, I sealed off the fracture by inserting cement (dark area) into her vertebra in order to prevent further collapse. The whole procedure took about 45 minutes and my patient went home the same day. Most importantly she recently came back to see me and her thoracic pain is almost completely gone .

I’m reminded of my ‘why’ every time I get a message like this. I’m truly grateful that I get the opportunity to make a small difference in the life of so many people who are suffering in pain every single day. I’m also grateful that I work with skilled, caring and compassionate nurses, aides and staff.
