Long Island Prevention Resource Center

Long Island Prevention Resource Center The PRC strives to meet this challenge by collaborating with community-based providers gathered to form strong local coalitions.

The Prevention Resource Center (PRC) is a not-for-profit organization serving Nassau & Suffolk County communities by providing effective prevention strategies that reduce alcohol, drug, and tobacco abuse and problem gambling. The Prevention Resource Center is committed to facilitating partnerships among schools, communities and prevention providers to focus on the provision of effective strategies to deal with alcohol, drug, and tobacco abuse and problem gambling. The PRC functions as a centralized clearinghouse of resources for youth, parents, professionals, treatment providers, educators, the media and the general public. We provide this education through a comprehensive continuum of resources, trainings, and community-related services. We serve as a liaison to support coalitions and prevention providers with the integration of prevention science to practice. The PRC utilizes the Strategic Prevention Planning Framework to promote strategies that are designed to reduce risk factors confronted by communities and families. By reducing risk factors and promoting protective factors within communities, families and individuals, we minimize the negative effects of substance abuse.

The Person-First and Identity-First Language Glossary aims to raise awareness and support the use of culturally sensitive terms and phrases that center the voices and perspectives of those who are often marginalized or stereotyped. It explains the origins of problematic terms and phrases and suggests alternatives. This glossary will continue to evolve as new terminology emerges or current language becomes outdated.

This new edition features updates and new topics, such as faith and immigration status, while continuing to promote culturally sensitive language that respects and affirms all.
