Here is a fun game that combines yoga and mindfulness meditation for kids aged 6-10. Let's play "Yogi Says"!

Here's how you can play the game:

1.) Designate one child as the "Yogi" to start the game.

2.) The Yogi leads the other players in a series of yoga poses, just like in the game of "Simon Says."

3.) The Yogi says "Yogi says" before instructing players to do a yoga pose, and players should only do the pose if the Yogi says "Yogi says" first.

4.) If the Yogi instructs players to do a pose without saying "Yogi says," and a player still does the pose, they're out for that round.

5.) The game continues until one player is left, and they become the new Yogi for the next round.

BONUS: To incorporate mindfulness into the game, the Yogi can ask players to take deep breaths while holding each pose and remind them to focus on their breath and the present moment. The game can also be modified to include mindfulness exercises like guided meditation, body scan, or visualization.

A fun music game that can encourage mindfulness in children 3-5 years of age is "Freeze Dance". Here's how to play:

1.) Turn on some upbeat music and dance around the room.

2.) When the music stops, everyone has to freeze in place.

3.) The children have to pay attention to their bodies and become aware of the present moment, focusing on their breathing and the sensations in their bodies.

4.) When the music starts again, the kids can start dancing again.

5.) Repeat this process several times, encouraging the kids to be mindful of their movements and breathing.

This game can help children develop body awareness and focus, and it's a fun way for them to engage with music and movement.

One helpful tip for helping children find their center during mindfulness meditation is to focus on their breath. Encourage them to take slow, deep breaths, and to pay attention to the sensation of air moving in and out of their body. You can also guide them to focus on the feeling of their body sinking into the ground or sitting comfortably in their chair. Another helpful technique is to have them imagine a peaceful place, such as a beach or a meadow, and to use their imagination to bring a sense of calm and stillness to their mind and body. Additionally, you can use simple visualizations, such as imagining a warm and comforting light surrounding them, to help them feel safe and secure.

✅ Tap into your full humanity

It makes sense that we want to distance ourselves from pain, but true wellness means learning to sit with our shadows as well as the light so we can be truly present and embrace the fullness of being human.

👩‍👧 A good mindfulness meditation technique for younger kids is the "breathing buddies" exercise.

To do this exercise, have the child sit comfortably and focus on their breathing. Have them picture a small creature (such as a favorite animal or a character from a book) sitting on their belly, and as they breathe in, the creature rises up, and as they breathe out, the creature falls back down.

This can help kids focus on their breathing and be present in the moment.

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr., let us reflect on his bold example of loving-kindness in action and help cultivate his vision of a compassionate world. To him, unconditional love was not passive acceptance, but a moral imperative to act—to speak out and stand up. 💙
