Many adults, yours truly included, have been identified ADHD and/or Autistic well into our 30s and beyond. It may not seem like a big deal, after all, what does it really change??
Turns out... A LOT. A WHOLE lot. And it makes a world of a difference having someone experienced walk alongside you during the process. That's where I come in.
If you're looking into beginning therapy after late identification, or on the fence about taking the leap, here are some of the areas we may explore when working together:
Identity Integration: Weaving this new understanding into one's sense of self, often leading to reexamining other identity aspects (gender, sexuality, religion) through this lens.
Internalized Biases: Working through embedded negative beliefs about disability that drive perfectionism, shame, and unrealistic standards requires intentionality.
Self-Advocacy: Learning to speak up for oneself and set boundaries is new territory for many, often complicated by lingering internalized negative beliefs.
Trauma & Chronic Invalidation: Many carry wounds from years of unsupported neurodivergent experiences, including sensory overwhelm and social rejection.
Sensory & Nervous System Regulation: Learning and integrating sensory awareness and calming techniques as core self-regulation tools. Education helps here, as many have received character-based explanations for sensory sensitivities.
Unmasking/Authentic Self: Connecting with one's genuine self by removing learned masks. Play and exploration help discover authentic preferences and soothing behaviors.
Additionally, other goals might include building executive function supports, creating personal accommodations, and navigating formal accommodation processes at work or school.
