A guide to pressure featuring various techniques we offer at Body Soul Being.
This is for example purposes only - every client will perceive applied pressure uniquely AND these techniques were applied to a flat, hard, non-moving surface of the scale… a human body has nuance and tissues do give way to pressure, additionally, the table underneath the body may have some slight give as pressure is applied. Furthermore, every therapist has their own unique body weight and pressure application and toolkit of techniques. Every session should, in theory, be unique as well as your wellbeing goals may change over time.
We’d also like to address the difference between “deep tissue technique” and “deep tissue pressure”. A HUGE misconception is that they are the same and they are absolutely not. Another common misconception: pain = gain. It does not, as a matter of clinically studied fact, pain = reinforced pain loops. (This is another post!)
When we apply a technique that seeks to access tissues that are deeper in the body (meaning under surface tissues or deeper than those tissues closer to the skin/outside of the body) we utilize knowledge of anatomy, observation, and thoroughly practiced palpation skills… we also use time and your body as a guide to move into those tissues. This is a deep tissue approach.
When we apply a technique (modifying how much or little body weight we pour into it) that seeks to give the client the perceived feeling of “deep or firm” pressure, this is a pressure approach. Which doesn’t necessarily seek to affect tissues that are deeper in the body.
Any bodyworker worth their salt is able to communicate the difference and when to safely apply both or either approach and why during your session.
If you’d like to explore any or all of the techniques and various pressure options we offer here, we’d be more than happy to guide your personal experience.
