Wellness Barb has officially entered her Hygiene Era 💁‍♀️

She may have had a “found in the parking lot” phase…

But these days? She practices prevention.

Recovery isn’t just the big breakthroughs, it’s the small, daily choices that protect us and the people around us.

Her reminder this week:
Wash 👏 Your 👏 Hands 👏

Clean hands. Clear mind. Healthy habits.

Another week. Another wellness win.

See you next week. 💗

💚 Eating Disorder Awareness Week: Understanding the Connection 💚

Did you know that 1 in 10 people with an eating disorder also struggle with substance use? Eating disorders and addiction often overlap, making awareness, early intervention, and compassionate support critical.

At Asurgent Health, we see how intertwined these challenges can be. Eating disorders can co-occur with substance use as a way to cope, and addressing both together increases the chance for long-term recovery.

Eating disorders affect millions of people each year, regardless of age, gender, or background. Recognizing the signs, reducing stigma, and providing integrated care can save lives.

This week, let’s raise awareness, share resources, and foster a culture where both mental health and recovery are prioritized. Recovery is possible — no one has to face it alone.

This Black History Month, we honor Dr. H. Westley Clark, M.D., J.D., M.P.H. 🌟 A national leader whose lifelong work helped transform addiction treatment and recovery across the United States.

Dr. Clark earned his B.A. in chemistry from Wayne State University in 1969, his M.D. from the University of Michigan in 1973, and later a J.D. from Harvard Law School. He served as Director of the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) from 1998–2014, where he championed evidence-based care, recovery-oriented systems, and expanded support for underserved communities.

Dr. Clark also served as Chief of the Associated Substance Abuse Programs at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in San Francisco from 1990 to 1998. and as an associate clinical professor in psychiatry at UCSF — roles where he helped shape the addiction workforce and advance equitable care. He later held the position of Dean’s Executive Professor of Public Health at Santa Clara University until his retirement in August 2022.

Dr. Clark’s legacy reminds us that policy matters, voices matter, and care must be equitable, compassionate, and rooted in community 💛.

In recovery, we see this truth play out every day.

While sobriety is often the visible milestone, thriving is built on something deeper: belonging.

The Harvard Study of Adult Development — one of the longest-running studies on human wellbeing — found that strong relationships are the single greatest predictor of long-term happiness and health. Not income. Not status. Not achievement. Connection. That’s why our Alumni Program is built around it.

Our alumni stay engaged with one another.
They support current clients.
They remain connected to the treatment community.
And in doing so, they strengthen their own recovery while helping others build theirs.

But this isn’t just about recovery.
It applies to all of us.
In leadership.
In parenting.
In work.
In life.

So, here’s a question worth sitting with:
Where are you truly connected — not just busy or networked, but genuinely known?
And where might deeper connection change your wellbeing?
Connection isn’t the bonus.
It’s the foundation.

Meet Wellness Barb 💕

A few weeks ago, she was discovered in our parking lot.
Cold. A little exposed. Making questionable life choices. ❄️🚬

We don’t know where she came from.
We don’t know what she’d been through.
But we do believe this:

Everyone deserves warmth.
Everyone deserves dignity.
Everyone deserves a second chance.

So we cleaned her up. Gave her clothes. Gave her community.

And now? She’s rebuilding her life, one healthy habit at a time.

Each week, Wellness Barb will pop up somewhere new in our office, sharing a small reminder about wellness, recovery, and taking care of yourself.

Because growth doesn’t happen overnight.
It happens one step at a time. 💗

Stay tuned for her weekly wellness drop!

Last week, our team celebrated “Spread the Love Week” at Asurgent Health 💕

Throughout the week, we intentionally created moments of connection, compassion, and community — while having a little fun along the way!

Each day gave us something a little different:
🏈 Favorite Team/Favorite Thing Day – celebrating the hobbies, colors, and teams that make us who we are
🧘‍♀️ Self-Love Day – a reminder that caring for ourselves allows us to better care for others
💙 Compassion Day – wearing blue and purple to represent hope and recovery
🥣 Comfort & Connection Day – sharing conversation (and soup!) with one another
❤️ Valentine’s Day – spreading kindness and positivity throughout our spaces

In the work we do, connection matters. Recovery is built on support, encouragement, and showing up for one another — and that starts within our own team.

We’re grateful for a staff that embraces opportunities to build culture, strengthen relationships, and bring a little extra light into the week. ✨💖

This Black History Month, we’re honoring Dr. Maxie Clarence Maultsby Jr., M.D. ✨ A visionary psychiatrist whose work transformed how we understand and support emotional well-being, resilience, and recovery.

Dr. Maultsby was the founder of Rational Behavior Therapy (RBT) — a groundbreaking approach that helped people learn how to manage emotions, challenge unhelpful thinking, and develop long-lasting, self-directed strategies for change 🧠. His Rational Self-Counseling and New Self-Help Alcoholic Relapse Prevention methods created practical tools that have influenced modern behavior therapy and supported countless individuals on their paths to mental health and recovery.

Beyond his clinical contributions, Dr. Maultsby was an Elected Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, a Lifetime Achievement Award recipient from the National Association of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapists, and an Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at Howard University — roles that reflect his influence on both science and education.

Dr. Maultsby’s legacy reminds us that empowering people with self-understanding and emotional self-management is at the heart of meaningful recovery 💛.

Valentine’s Day doesn’t look the same for everyone, and that’s okay.

For some, it’s about romance. For others, it’s about healing, growth, or simply getting through the day.

At Asurgent Health, we believe love is more than flowers or grand gestures.
Love can look like choosing recovery.
Love can look like setting boundaries.
Love can look like asking for help.

Valentine's Day is also a reminder that self-love matters.

Caring for yourself, honoring your needs, and giving yourself grace are powerful acts of love. You deserve care, compassion, and support — from others and from yourself. 💗

At Asurgent Health, we’re committed to keeping our staff informed and prepared in an ever-changing world.

This week, we had the chance to share lunch together while participating in a training focused on understanding appropriate workplace protocols and knowing how to respond if unexpected situations arise.

We’re excited to welcome Zoe Polter to the Asurgent team as our Executive Assistant. Zoe brings organization, warmth, and a thoughtful approach to supporting both our leadership team and our mission.

When asked why she’s passionate about her work, Zoe shared:
💜 “I love working with people and problem solving. I've always felt passionate about the mental health field, and with my husband specializing in psychiatry, this industry is quite familiar to me.”

This Black History Month, we honor Lonnie Edward Mitchell, Ph.D. 💫 A true innovator whose work helped shape the modern addiction treatment profession.

Dr. Mitchell was a trailblazer in addiction treatment and workforce development, playing a pivotal role in the early days of the The National Institute on Drug Abuse - NIDA by focusing on training and credentialing the nation’s addiction treatment workforce — including both lived-experience counselors and medical professionals 🧠📚. His efforts helped build bridges between the helping professions and what was then a largely informal recovery workforce, dramatically expanding capacity and professional collaboration across the field.

He also shared his expertise as a professor at Howard University’s medical college, where he served as deputy director of the Center for Youth — helping educate and mentor future leaders in behavioral health care.

Dr. Mitchell’s legacy reminds us that strengthening the recovery workforce and expanding access to compassionate, culturally aware care remains foundational to improving lives affected by addiction. 💛
