💜September is National Recovery Month, a time to honor the strength, healing, and hope found in recovery.

Recovery is resilience. Recovery is grit. Recovery is healing.
Recovery is connection. Recovery is support. Recovery is humility.
Recovery is acceptance. Recovery is love. Recovery is purpose.

Recovery is always more than a return to functioning. It’s a journey of transformation—a perpetual evolution. This month, let’s ask, listen, and share our stories.💜

Navigating Addiction Treatment: Understanding Levels of Care

Early recovery can feel overwhelming—full of fear, confusion, and uncertainty. When someone decides they’re ready to get help, knowing where to begin can be one of the hardest parts. Families, too, can feel frantic trying to find the right support for their loved one.

Understanding the different types of treatment and recovery support options can be crucial in helping someone get the best possible start. Below is a breakdown of common levels of care in addiction treatment:

🔹 Outpatient Treatment (OP):
1–2 hours per week of individual and/or group therapy. This is the lowest level of clinical care and is ideal for those with strong support systems and lower levels of acuity.

🔹 Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP):
Typically includes 3 hours of group therapy per day, 3 days per week. Allows individuals to work or attend school while receiving structured support.

🔹 Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP):
Structured treatment 5 days per week, usually 6–8 hours per day. Clients may return home each evening or reside in affiliated sober living environments.

🔹 Residential Treatment:
Involves living on-site for around 28 days. Clients receive both individual and group therapy in a structured and supportive setting.

🔹 Withdrawal Management (Detox):
Focuses on medical stabilization during the first 5–7 days of sobriety. Clinical services are minimal during this phase, with the primary goal being physical stabilization.

🔹 Sober Living Homes:
Safe and structured housing shared with others in recovery, often 5–10 residents per home. While therapy isn’t provided, these homes offer accountability, structure, and support for building a sober lifestyle.

🔹 Residential Recovery Communities:
Longer-term (4–12 months) peer-led recovery homes focused on structure, accountability, and life skills. These are non-clinical environments often run by individuals with long-term sobriety.

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to recovery. The key is finding a level of care that matches an individual’s needs and stage in their recovery journey. If you’re supporting a loved one—or walking this path yourself—know that guidance is available. You don’t have to navigate it alone.

“I am a Licensed Professional Counselor – Associate with specialized training in play therapy, a method that helps children express themselves and work through challenges using play, art, and imagination. I hold an Education Specialist degree in Counselor Education and a certificate in Play Therapy from the University of South Carolina, and I am currently working toward becoming a Registered Play Therapist.

I’ve worked with children and adolescents experiencing:
• Trauma
• ADHD
• Anxiety, depression, and grief
• Behavioral challenges
• Social and emotional struggles

I understand how to meet children where they are—emotionally, socially, and developmentally. I also work with parents and caregivers to strengthen communication, foster emotional regulation, and support healing at home.

My counseling style is warm, empathetic, and collaborative. I primarily use a person-centered approach, meaning I focus on creating a safe space where children feel seen and understood. I also incorporate techniques from cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, and experiential therapy to support emotional growth and coping skills.

In addition to my clinical work, I’ve served since 2019 as the Outreach Coordinator and a Board Member for the Jake Koenigsdorf Foundation, which supports individuals and families impacted by substance use. This has deepened my understanding of the complex dynamics families face and the importance of long-term support systems.

My goal is to help your child feel safe, build trust, and develop the tools they need to thrive. Sessions typically last 60 minutes and are tailored to your child’s unique needs.”

How would define recovery or healing? If you are in some type of recovery, how can you tell you are getting better?
