At least half of our grain intake ought to be whole grain! Yes, we should minimize our consumption of refined processed grains, but whole grains are indeed beneficial to our health (that is if we do not have any intolerances or food sensitivities to them).
Whole grains and/or ancient grains energize our bodies with complex carbohydrate, provide a natural source of fiber and B vitamins. Thus they will promote society and balance in our daily meal plan.

"I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed." ― Michael Jordan

Great article!

We start to lose muscle in our 30s, and the loss accelerates with age, putting us at risk of frailty later in life. But what you eat — specifically how much protein — is a big part of the solution.

Food for thought

Most of us are aware of the importance of protein in our diet. We also know that protein can be found in both animal and plant-based foods. However, we may not be aware that some sources of protein may be better for our health than others.

Lean cuts of meat, poultry without skin, eggs, fish, low-fat or fat-free dairy, legumes (beans peas, lentils, soy) nuts and seeds are all foods that have health benefits, such as improving blood pressure and lowering cholesterol.

Some high protein foods may be high in saturated fat, and put us at risk for heart disease. The most common sources of saturated fats for adults in the United States are deli sandwiches, burgers, tacos, burritos, grilled cheese, hotdogs, meatballs, casseroles and quesadillas. Furthermore we should also limit our intake foods such as bacon, fried foods, sausage, chicken fried steak, fried chicken, pepperoni and processed meats to three servings or less per week. Key word- serving size.

The dietary guidelines for Americans recommends no more than 10% of our total daily energy intake come from saturated fat. Therefore, a 1500 cal diet allows about 16g of saturated fat daily and a 2000 cal diet would allow about 22 g daily.

1 oz. (1/3 cup shredded) cheddar cheese contains about 5.4 g of saturated fat.
1 oz (about the size of your thumb) 80/20ground beef or breakfast pan sausage contains 2g of saturated fat. Many people have about 3 to 4 ounces of protein in a given meal so the saturated fat can add up quick.

We can keep healthy habit building simple and easy by attaching a new healthy behavior to something we already do on a regular basis. For example, if we want to start tracking our diet we could start by logging a meal during our morning coffee or on our lunch break. This concept is commonly used in medication compliance. That is, we use a normal routine behavior, such as brushing our teeth, to remind us to do something new, like take medication. We use the normal behavior to initiate a new one and eventually it becomes a normal part of our routine!
