This will be my last post on this page. My thirty year career in surgery was something I never even dreamed about when I was growing up. I really wanted to be a pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals. Bob Gibson was my hero. I want to thank my family, especially my wife Latha for putting up with all the sleepless nights, missed events and times when I just wasn't present because of work problems. To all the patients who benefited from my work, I thank you for putting your trust in me and letting me into your life. I can't tell you what an honor and privilege it was. For those of you that had complications, especially serious ones, or didn't receive the benefit that you had hoped for, it is you that I thought about the most. Never in my life did I just go home and forget. I laid awake so many nights thinking what can I do different. How could I have done better? I felt the pain not just of patients, but their families as well. Surgery is performed by imperfect human beings on other imperfect human beings. There will always be problems. I often marveled at the incredible things that we are able to do for people.
I have been the recipient of so much gratitude from patients and their families that it is embarrassing. I have also experienced occasional hatred and anger. It's a part of the job and if you can't accept that you should not operate on people for a living.
I want to thank all the women who helped me take care of patients over the years. Most had to juggle not only this job but taking care of their own family as well. I especially want to thank the program coordinators I had over the years: Tammy Arrington, Jennifer Laborde, Amy Franks, Sam Ferrell and Jennifer McBrain. What an amazing and talented group of ladies!!!
I've moved on now to my next endeavor which is online medical weight loss through my website www.virtualbariatrics.com You can also find me on Facebook under the same name. All visits are done virtually in the comfort of your own home or wherever you choose. However, you still get the one on one attention from someone with 20 years of experience treating obesity. I would be honored to take care of anyone who needs my help losing weight.
Medication is as affordable as possible and shipped directly to you. You have the convenience of scheduling your own visits online.
Thanks again for making my professional life such a rich one. I'm blessed beyond measure. By the way, these are my own words. Not a single one was generated by AI!

As most of you are aware, this is the last week for the bariatric center to be open. I will be starting my online practice next week. You can make an appointment at www.virtualbariatrics.com. If your last appointment with me for medical weight loss was in December or before, you should set up an appointment for February. If you saw me this month, you can wait until March. I'm very happy to report that I have been able to secure even better pricing for your medication and it will still be delivered directly to your home. If you have any questions, you can reach me by email at Jerome.schrapps@pm.me. I hope that I will be able to continue seeing as many of you as possible.

It has been awhile since we posted and I apologize for that. I have some important news to share. I will be retiring from surgical practice as of January 30, 2026. I am very ambivalent regarding the decision but I know that it is the right thing to do. I will be starting an all online practice so I can continue prescribing medication to help people in their weight loss journey. The Southeast Texas Bariatric Center will unfortunately no longer exist. The demand for surgery has gone down due to GLP-1 medication and no surgeon wants to be on call all the time like I have basically done for some time now. I do want to thank Dr. Dean for all of his support over the years. I also want to thank Christus and specifically Paul Trevino for all of the support. In my career I have helped make the world 300,000 pounds lighter. I'm so proud of all the hard work that I have witnessed from my patients. You have truly inspired me. I'm also deeply sorry to the patients that didn't achieve what they hoped to or had complications from their surgery. It is part of being a surgeon, but always affected me personally. If you are interested in continuing to see me for medical care you can email me at Jerome.schrapps@pm.me and I will send you more information. It has been my honor to be part of your life. God Bless!!

At least half of our grain intake ought to be whole grain! Yes, we should minimize our consumption of refined processed grains, but whole grains are indeed beneficial to our health (that is if we do not have any intolerances or food sensitivities to them).
Whole grains and/or ancient grains energize our bodies with complex carbohydrate, provide a natural source of fiber and B vitamins. Thus they will promote society and balance in our daily meal plan.

"I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed." ― Michael Jordan
