Did you know that 1 in 2 women and up to 1 in 4 men over 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis? The disease often progresses silently—until a fracture makes it impossible to ignore. That’s where bone densitometry, also known as a DEXA scan, comes in.

This quick, low-radiation test measures bone mineral density and helps identify osteoporosis before a break occurs. It’s painless, takes about 10–20 minutes, and could help prevent life-altering injuries.

Some eye-opening facts:

-80% of people with osteoporosis are undiagnosed, even though early detection can cut fracture risk by up to 50% with proper treatment.
-Hip fractures—often due to weakened bones—are linked to a 5x increased risk of death within a year for older adults.
-Despite its value, only 20% of women who suffer a fracture ever get a bone density test afterward.

If you're over 65 (for women), over 70 (for men), or have risk factors like smoking, steroid use, or a family history of fractures give us a call to schedule a DEXA Bone Densitometry: (409) 838-0033.

When most people think of ultrasound, they picture the first blurry image of a baby in the womb. But there’s much more to this technology than prenatal snapshots. Ultrasound is a powerful diagnostic tool that's transforming how we detect and monitor a wide range of conditions—without radiation, pain, or long wait times.

What sets ultrasound apart is its real-time imaging capability. This means clinicians can watch blood flow, see organs in motion, and guide procedures with remarkable precision as they happen. It's especially valuable in vascular care, where ultrasound can detect narrowing arteries, blood clots, and circulatory issues before symptoms even arise.

True!

Digital mammography uses digital receptors and computers instead of X-ray film to examine breast tissue. This technology allows radiologists to adjust image contrast, zoom in on areas of concern, and store and share images electronically. Studies have shown that digital mammography is particularly beneficial for women under 50, premenopausal or perimenopausal women, and those with dense breast tissue. In these cases, digital images provide better visibility and detail, which can improve cancer detection rates and reduce the number of follow-up tests needed.

Scoliosis is a condition that causes a sideways curvature of the spine, most commonly developing during adolescence. While mild cases may go unnoticed, more severe curves can lead to discomfort, reduced mobility, and long-term health complications if left untreated.

Early detection is key.
Scoliosis is typically diagnosed through a physical exam and confirmed with imaging tests like X-rays. During a routine screening, a healthcare provider may perform the Adam’s Forward Bend Test, which can reveal abnormal spine curvature or uneven shoulders or hips.

If scoliosis is suspected, give us a call! (409) 838-0033.

False!
While Alzheimer's is more common in older age groups, it can also affect individuals in their 40s and 50s, known as early-onset Alzheimer's. This underscores the importance of understanding the risk factors and symptoms at all stages of life. Let's educate ourselves and spread awareness to support those affected by Alzheimer's and other brain diseases.

Yes, but we only require bloodwork for those who are 60 years and older.

Blood tests measure kidney function and are often required before a scan with intravenous contrast. This test ensures that your kidneys are healthy enough to filter the contrast. The tests are usually blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine, and you should complete them within 30 days before the exam. We also require glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) levels.

Stroke is the #3 cause of death in women, and black women face an ever greater risk.

Stroke risk increases for women who are pregnant, experience preeclampsia, take birth control pills, use hormone replacement therapy, and experience migraines.

Talk to your healthcare professional if any of the above risk factors apply to you. Additionally, an MRI can potentially detect new strokes within minutes. An MRI can also detect old strokes for decades after they happen.
