September is PAD awareness month… Did you know, that in the U.S., peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a major cause of nontraumatic lower-limb amputations, with around 150,000 amputations occurring annually. PAD affects over 10 million people, and up to 400 amputations related to this condition happen every day. Individuals with diabetes, high blood pressure, or a history of to***co use are at a much higher risk for developing PAD and, subsequently, undergoing amputation.

Racial disparities are significant in PAD-related amputations. Black Americans are twice as likely to develop PAD and up to four times more likely to experience an amputation compared to white Americans. Hispanic populations also tend to present with more severe forms of PAD, resulting in a higher likelihood of amputations.

These alarming statistics highlight the need for increased awareness and early intervention, as timely screening and treatment can help prevent amputations and improve outcomes for those affected.

September is Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) Awareness Month, a time to educate and empower people to act against the most debilitating disease they haven’t heard of—or know that they have.
