📚 Evidence → 🎨 Creativity → 🤝 Participation

Lamar SPHS faculty member, Karen Whisenhunt Saar, and Moravian faculty member, Monica Kaniamattam lead a professional development workshop for SLPs in Yakima School District in Yakima, WA today. They discussed the process and benefits of integrating the arts into language intervention.

THANK YOU to this amazing group of SLPs for brainstorming how to create meaningful arts-based communication and participation opportunities for children on their caseloads.

THANK YOU to LU and Moravian students for creating a website of evidence for Yakima SD SLPs to inspire and support the integration of arts into school-based clinical practice!

✨ ASHA 2025 — Our Lamar University community shined this year — showcasing scholarship, leadership, and the future of communication sciences. 💬📚

👩‍🏫 Dr. Boult & Harvest Fairchild — Represented LU together and modeled strong faculty–student mentorship. This was Harvest’s first ASHA, where she stepped into national conversations on student scholarship and professional growth.

🗣️ Mrs. Chelsea Lyles & Monique Ge**er — Presented “Aphasia and Friendships: Perspectives from Significant Others.” Their qualitative work examined how friendships shift after aphasia — from shrinking social networks and communication challenges to emotional labor, grief, and the slow rebuilding of connection.

📚 Lynne Stevens, Karen Miranda, & Dr. Boult — Shared “Grow Your Own: Promoting CSD Careers to High School Students.” They highlighted a grassroots model for inspiring future audiologists and SLPs through early outreach, school partnerships, and mentoring programs that help build sustainable, diverse career pipelines.

🌍 Harvest Fairchild — Presented “Bridging Disciplines: Integrating Interprofessionalism into Modern Healthcare Education.” Her research advocates for collaboration across healthcare fields to support equity and improve patient outcomes. She led both virtual and in-person poster sessions.

🎓 Honoring excellence in research!

Harvest Prater, 2025 David J. Beck Fellow, traveled to Chicago this past summer for her fellowship at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab — U.S. News and World Report’s #1 Ranked Rehabilitation Hospital. There, she explored innovative diagnostic tools in aphasia service provision—supporting a randomized controlled trial on naming and oral reading assessment practices. Her work reflects the heart of Speech and Hearing Sciences: focus, empathy, excellence, and impact.
