At just 23 years old, Ukrainian scientist Valentyn Frechka developed a patented process that turns autumn leaves into paper, helping to cut back on deforestation and reduce urban waste. His startup, Releaf Paper, can produce one ton of paper using 2.3 tons of fallen leaves—without needing to cut down a single tree.

This innovation landed him a finalist spot for the 2024 European Inventor Award out of more than 550 applicants. Frechka’s chemical-free process supports the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and offers a powerful alternative to traditional paper manufacturing. With operations in Paris and Kyiv, he now plans to expand the concept using banana leaves and other organic waste.

With this month being Su***de Prevention Awareness Month, we wanted to showcase a local author who just published a book of poetry that really touches on what it feels like to be at a place where you want to give up.
This book is full of hope, love and inspiration.

Here’s a little about the author, Leah Maurizio:

"R;se" is a volume of poetry that dives into the thoughts and feelings of one who suffers from depression and suicidal ideation, while simultaneously giving the reader hope and the will to continue living. Although it is most relatable to those who experience this type of mental illness, it can also be a great tool for the loved ones of those suffering, for it allows the reader to gain a better understanding of what the disease feels like. The author's motive in writing the book was to provide the reader with the comfort, understanding, and hope she once needed during the darkest times in her own life. If she can save even one life through this creation, she is thankful. The read covers the depth of suicidal ideation, aiming to help end the stigma. Expect to feel seen, heard, safe, and hopeful.

The link to her book is below. I truly believe that EVERY single person can benefit from this book.

We will be sharing some of the writings as the month goes on.

This month, we affirm our commitment to creating a world free from discrimination, and access to mental health care without conditions. We believe everyone should have a safe space when seeking mental health resources and support.
