Abuse can happen to anyone, no matter the person’s age, s*x, race, religion, or ethic background. Each year, hundreds of thousands of adults over the age of 60 are abused, neglected, or financially exploited. This mistreatment is called ELDER ABUSE.

Abuse can happen anywhere, including in the older person’s home, a family member’s home, an assisted living facility, or a nursing home.

The mistreatment of older adults can be by family members, strangers, health care providers, caregivers, or friends.

As we embark on Mental Health Awareness Month, I would like to increase awareness to the connection of ANXIETY and DEMENTIA.

Did you know that long-term anxiety triggers stress hormones that damage neurons, raising dementia risk and other health problems? This type of stress level, accelerates cognitive decline due to hormone damage.

For individuals living with chronic anxiety, studies show that they are 2.8 times more likely to develop dementia in 10 years. Those with new onset anxiety, 3.2 times more likely.

Overall, chronic anxiety leads to health issues, such as cardiovascular disease, weight gain, and brain cell damage. All of these increase one’s risk for dementia.

To learn more about managing your anxiety and brain health, schedule your free consultation today memories4lifeconsulting.com and allow us to assist with decreasing your risk for dementia.

Remember, DEMENTIA is a cluster of symptoms that CAN be treated.

Caring for your elderly parents or providing assistance to your spouse or loved one may become overwhelming and stressful at times.
When challenged with this task, even siblings and other family members can struggle to work together to fulfill their parents’ care needs. Levels of stress and emotions are, needless to say, running high. Couple that with their past family history and dynamics, which have a tendency to resurface during difficult times, and it’s not hard to see how challenging this stage in life can be for everyone.

Our Elder Care Mediators are professionally trained in conflict resolution, and they offer a neutral, third-party voice to family conversations. They can help defuse heightened feelings and outbursts and direct the dialogue in a way that creates an outcome that everyone can accept.

If you are caring for your aging parents with your siblings or caring for your spouse or loved one and need help of an Elder Care Mediator to assist with navigating through care issues, senior living options, support groups for grief, caregiver burnout, or assistance with financial, legal and social support, book your consultation TODAY…..

Would you say, that your staff is fully capable of providing the appropriate care and services to your dementia and Alzheimer’s patients? Are they qualified? Are they competent? Do they understand how to communicate effectively with this population? There are federal and state requirements for dementia training for all staff working in Skilled Nursing Facilities, Assisted Living Facilities, Memory Care Facilities and all Residential Care Facilities/Homes.

If these requirements are not fulfilled, the corporation is at risk for regulatory citations that can potentially result in financial penalties and liability exposures. Not to mention, it directly results in poorer care for the patients, including higher mortality rates, increased behavioral issues like agitation, and higher risks of falls or injuries.

Most importantly we must prepare and protect our staff/caregivers. If dementia training is not provided to them, this lack of knowledge can cause burnout and high turnover.

Legally, failure to meet requirements can lead to regulatory citations and compliance penalties for facilities/communities.

Let’s talk about Nonverbal Communication Strategies for a moment.

Nonverbal communication is just as important as verbal communication when communicating with dementia patients. It is essential as caregivers to pay attention to our nonverbal cues such as facial expressions, tone of voice, and body language. Following these methods will help convey our messages more effectively.

Also, when communicating with a dementia patient, it’s important to use a calm and reassuring tone of voice. Speak slowly and clearly, and try to maintain eye contact. It never hurts to use gestures with soft physical touch to assist with conveying your message.

It is important to understand that dementia care requires more than patience. It requires strategy, awareness, and the ability to respond without taking behavior personally.
When we understand the “why,” of the demented person’s behavior, everything changes:
*Fewer incidents
*Better outcomes
*Safer environments
*Stronger compliance

Do you know that most dementia “behaviors” aren’t behaviors at all? They are communication.
But too often in healthcare and in the home, we respond with improper communicative responses, instead we respond with:
1. Control instead of curiosity
2. Correction instead of compassion
3. Force instead of understanding

And that’s where things go wrong….

To learn more about proper communication methods with the dementia patient and for your staff who work in Communities and Facilities, please visit us today @ memories4lifeconsulting.com to schedule your FREE consultation.
