Sometimes our fear, worry, and anxiety cause us to experience painful events that may not even happen. Recognizing when we're getting ahead of ourselves and living in present moment helps to keep things in perspective. We can only control what's happening right now.

Most of us can walk out the door every day and cope just fine with the world. There are many others, though, who step outside into a world full of danger, a conclusion resulting from their painful past experiences.

The first step to finding peace and safety in your world is learning how to regulate the autonomic nervous system so that it no longer perceives threat as you go about your day.

Also: Be kind and give grace. We never know what those around us are struggling with inside themselves.

We tend to become more like the people we surround ourselves with. Surrounding yourself with positive, confident individuals will improve your confidence as well.

When we feel good, we feel better about ourselves. Make sure you're eating well, sleeping well, and exercising regularly.

Lastly, remember that we're all human and are not perfect. When we realize that we're allowed to make mistakes and then give ourselves grace, we feel better about who we are.

Drs John and Julie Gottman discovered the 4 horsemen while studying couples and what predicts divorce. They found that these four negative communication styles, when frequently present, are the most damaging, with contempt being the most dangerous one.

While most relationships will see some of this, healthy relationships won't see them as often and they are better at repairing the damage caused by them.

Not all is lost if you find yourself stuck in these negative patterns. In therapy, couples can learn healthy conflict resolution skills and ways to build friendship and connection between arguments to reduce the frequency and intensity of their conflict.

If you're spending your life worrying about the future or ruminating on your past, you are missing opportunities to excel in the present. Live life in the now.

Disclaimer: Intrusive thoughts, memories, and flashbacks are not what I'm talking about here. Sometimes, especially when there has been trauma in the past, individuals are unable to prevent those things from coming up.
