7 hours a day = estimated time the average American spends using digital devices and by analyzing data and research, the use of this technology for extended periods of time can have a significant effect on our vision as well as sleep patterns and overall health.

March is Save your Vision month and the focus is on the effects of blue light (the light given off by digital devices) on our vision and general health. This month is to increase awareness about good eye care and encourage people to get regular eye exams. With computers becoming an everyday part of people’s lives, the risk of eye strain and damage is higher than ever. #saveyourvisionmonth

Daily lifestyle habits can reduce your risk for Age Related Macular Degeneration, AMD. A healthy diet, not smoking and maintaining healthy blood pressure are important first steps.

Other healthy habits that can lower the risk of AMD include:

🔹 Eat a diet with plenty of green, leafy vegetables such as kale, spinach, and collard greens, and fresh fruit.

🔹 Fish that is high in omega-3 fatty acids is good for eye health. Eat salmon, sardines, mackerel, herring, and albacore tuna.

🔹 Maintain a healthy weight, exercise regularly, maintain healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

🔹 Wear sunglasses and a hat with a visor in bright sunlight to protect your eyes from potentially harmful ultra-violet (UV) light and blue light.

What is AMD? Age-related macular degeneration is a chronic, progressive disease that affects the central field of vision and can lead to blindness. #AMD attacks the macula, a part of the retina that allows us to see objects located straight ahead of us.

Age is the biggest risk factor for AMD. In fact, nearly 1 in 8 adults over the age of 60 suffer from this chronic disease. Family history also plays a significant role in the likelihood of developing AMD. Talk to your optometrist at your next visit if you would like more information.

We are excited to welcome Dr. Tuan Tran to our practice. He and his wife recently moved to Beavercreek. In his spare time, Dr. Tran enjoys hiking, traveling and working out.

He graduated from the Michigan College of Optometry and completed a residency in Pediatrics, Vision Therapy and Neurorehabilitation.

Please give him a warm welcome to Dr. Tran when you see him in the office. He will be seeing patients on Thursdays.

Our faces are not designed to wear masks for hours at a time. Wearing masks obstructs the normal flow of air from our nostrils and also re-directs some of the air we exhale up towards our eyes. This can contribute to the drying up of the lubrication in the eyes, resulting in irritation or inflammation of the eye surface.

*Wear adequately fit masks, preferably with pliable nose-wire to prevent or minimize the upward flow of air from your nostrils towards the eyes.

*Select the right mask, make sure it doesn't interfere with the normal blinking process.

If necessary, use lubricating eye drops.

Regardless of age, everyone should have an annual eye exam. Seeing clearly is just one part of your overall eye health. It’s important to have regular eye exams whether or not you wear glasses or contacts, and even if your vision is sharp.

If you missed your eye exam in 2020, call our office to get on our schedule soon!

There are many things can be spotted with an eye exam even if you don't realize something is going on. Early detection is key. #annualeyeexam #eyehealth

Since there are no symptoms typically associated with glaucoma, testing becomes critical. Therefore, getting an annual eye exam becomes very important to obtain an early diagnosis.

Factors that could contribute to glaucoma include:
--Degree of nearsightedness, if you have a high prescription your risk increases
--Family history
--Race, higher incidence in the Black and Hispanic population

Did you know...a Champagne cork can fly up to 50 mph as it leaves the bottle – fast enough to shatter glass. If the cork hits an eye, it can cause bleeding, abrasions and even glaucoma or blindness.

This time of year dry eye becomes an issue for many. Unfortunately, masks can also contribute to drying out your eyes if air is leaking from the mask and going up to your eyes. Another thing we may be doing more frequently these days is looking at our digital devices more.

Try using over-the-counter artificial tears and take frequent breaks when looking at digital screens. Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Regarding masks, some people benefit from taping their mask across the top of the nose to prevent air leakage.

Yesterday was the Great American Smoke Out. Not only is smoking harmful to your lungs, it is also bad for your eyes 👀

Studies show smoking increases the risk of age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy as well as dry eye syndrome.

Keratoconus is a progressive eye disease in which the normally round cornea thins and begins to bulge into a cone-like shape, causing distorted and blurred vision. Glare and light sensitivity also may occur.

Genetics can play a part in the cause. If you would like to discuss this with one of our optometrists please do so at your next appointment.

Diabetes Awareness Month‼️: anyone with diabetes is at risk for vision loss or blindness from diabetic eye disease.

Diabetic eye disease has no warning signs. However, early detection and timely treatment can help reduce the risks. A good place to start is to obtain an annual, comprehensive dilated eye examination as it is one of the best ways to detect early signs of diabetic eye disease.

Every year, colored Halloween contact lenses have become more popular and more widespread. They are a seemingly easy way to drastically alter your appearance and enhance a costume.

However, risk for this particular costume accessory is high. Contact lenses are classified as medical devices and it is illegal to sell them to someone without a prescription. Even the lenses that do not have a prescription in them need to be fitted to you according to the size of your cornea. Cheap, over-the-counter contact lenses are not regulated by the FDA and you may be setting yourself up for a host of potential problems by using them.
